Delroy 10-14-03, - 10:29 PM Who or what do you worship? What do you believe in? Why do you believe in it? CG 10-14-03, - 11:09 PM Who or what do you worship? What do you believe in? Why do you believe in it? Wow Delroy! You have given us something to sink our teeth into! Well done! Let us make sure we all sink our teeth into the subject and not each other! Let me give you my answers. Who or what do you worship? As a Buddhist we do not worship any thing or any "body." We meditate to awaken our real selves. However, having said that, I am one of those Buddhists that believes that there is a God too. Buddha believed in a God. He, according to the stories, spoke with him. But he believed that the God(s) needed enlightenment as much as we do. I am not so sure about that! But I do see the God of the Christian Bible as a somewhat tragic being, a good being but tragic. What do you believe in? I believe in the goodness of mankind. (Which is the expression of God.) Yes, I know that some folks keep it well hidden. I also know that there are evil men but by and large I have seen too much of the goodness of man to say that it is not there. Why do you believe in it? "The proof of the pudding is in the eating." So the saying goes. I believe what I believe because I have not just read it, I have not just heard others tell of it - I have lived it! I have "eaten" the pudding and it is good. I quickly point out, it is good for me. You may find that another "pudding" suits your taste. I have no quarrel with that. I am in a place that "allows" others to believe what they want to as long as it does not hurt others. And in the long run we all have to live by that. Delroy 10-14-03, - 11:24 PM Wow Delroy! What or who do you believe created you? Why do you call this being God? CG 10-14-03, - 11:47 PM Thanks for the reply CG. What or who do you believe created you? Why do you call this being God? Thank you for your reply. Delroy. You asked, "What or who do you believe created you?" Strange as this might seem, that is not an important question to a Buddhist. Buddhist believe that we do not come into the world, we come out of it - as do the other forms of life. Buddhism believes that life comes and goes and it has little or nothing to do with a creator. It is the natural order of life. Even the universe is born, dies and is created again. It is a self perpetuating thing. Why do you call this being God? I call this being God out of respect to those, the majority of people reading on this site. If I were posting on another kind of site I might refer to God as, "The which, of which there is no whicher." or "The Soul of the Universe." or "The Tao." or by a number of different names, but they all point to the same being. You say that it is not an important question to a Buddhist to know ones origin? I was always thought that if I did not know where I cam from I wont know where I am going. Tell me what is important to a Buddhist? CG 10-15-03, - 12:41 AM So you believe that the universe created itself? You say that it is not an important question to a Buddhist to know ones origin? I was always thought that if I did not know where I cam from I wont know where I am going. Tell me what is important to a Buddhist?"So you believe that the universe created itself?" I don’t know, but it is not important. "You say that it is not an important question to a Buddhist to know ones origin?" That is right. "I was always thought that if I did not know where I came from I won’t know where I am going." A popular myth. Do any of us really "know" where we came from? In another thread I was writing to Haitianboy. He was lamenting the fact that he will never know where his ancestors came from (in Africa.) My advice to him was. "You may never know where you came from, but you know that you are here - now. So live!!!" Tell me what is important to a Buddhist? It is important to be here, in the now! Buddhists are, generally speaking, not to interested in the past or the future. The past is gone. The future, uncertain. All we have is the now. I have talked with lots of people who were trapped in the regrets of the past or were worried about the future. They never live the, now. Now is where we live - so live it and do the work life has for you. Peace is also important to a Buddhist. World peace? Yes. But there is another kind of peace. Jesus and St. Paul talked about it too. That is the peace that passes all understanding. It is peace where there seldom is peace - that is in the very soul of man. It has been said that, "all men live lives of quiet desperation." A true Buddhist, and yes, a true Christian does not live in such a way. Their peace does not come from circumstances, or from "life" but from within. That is important! Achieving enlightenment is the most important thing. Some make it, some do not. Enlightenment is the awakening to your true nature, the Buddha-nature. By awakening you end, or at least, understand, suffering. You see the world, mankind, everything in there true nature. It is hard to described. In fact it can’t be. It must be experienced. Wow!! It is way past my bed time! Hope to hear from you tomorrow? Delroy 10-15-03, - 12:47 AM You gave me allot to sleep on. You will hear my answers to my own questions later today. Good night. Rory 10-15-03, - 01:34 AM Who or what do you worship? ME What do you believe in? NOT MUCH Why do you believe in it? Tell me what is important to a Buddhist? Yes Delroy, did you not know that even among your own (christians) there is a prevailing acceptance of evolution, including the Budhists. The majority of the scientific community and those who accept their premises believe that the universe created itself. It is called the Big Bang Theory. No intervention by any god was necessary for the universe formation just matter and or energy. It is only important to understand our origins from the standpoint of how we/the universe will conclude. Belief in oneself is the greatest faith one can have, not some supernatural entity. We should worhip our minds because of its creative capacity and also its ability for allowing humans to experience this beautiful world in which we live. I don't want to stray far from the topic Truthseeker we can discuss the Big Bang in another thread. I want to know what you believe. Delroy 10-15-03, - 10:13 PM Who or what do I worship? I worship the Lord God Jehovah through His Son; Jesus Christ. What do I believe in? I believe in the Word of God which is contained within the Bible. I believe that the Bible is Gods' way of allowing men to know Him and to know themselves. Why do I believe in it? The Bible is the only source that I have found that gives me a clear understanding and answers to all of life's most important questions (Who I am, where I came from and where I am going?). I am sure that as 99% of those on this site are Christians, no one of that faith can add anything to what you wrote. Unless there are people of other faiths reading, who want to contribute, the thread could end here but lets try and keep it alive a little longer. Let us assume that there are readers (and it might be the case) who have never heard of Jehovah God. They don’t even know about the Christian concept of God. They have never heard of Jesus and as for the Bible? Never heard of it!! Let me ask some of the questions that they might ask. Who is this God you speak of? Where does he live? What does he do? He had a son, why? What is this Bible you speak of? Are there more important questions of life, other than the ones you mentioned? Vicky 10-20-03, - 07:22 AM Hi all sorry was not online for a while. Who or what do I worship? It depends on what you call worship. I don’t believe I need to sing, dance or even bend a knee in subservience and humility to worship the Creator. I will stand proud for the Creator, as a child would do with a parent. When I say a prayer its to the Creator. I do my best to respect all things as it all comes from the Creator. I do my best to live and learn to live from all the messengers of the Creator. The messengers that bring messages of hatred and Violence that cause the mistreatment of others are not messengers of the Creator. What do I believe in? I don’t believe in the Bible because it is to corrupted by power hungry men. To follow its laws and teachings I would have to do harm to others. I don’t believe in the building of churches (the buildings) when there are homeless. I don’t believe in any religious leaders who take more than they need and the poor around them are still poor. I don’t believe in religious leaders trying to have power over the government or the people they are supposed to be teachers. I do believe in the teachings of Christ. Why do I believe in it? That’s easy just imagine a place where no one is hungry or homeless unless you want to be. A place and time where everyone treated you as they would want to be treated. Can you imagine a place where if your house burned down the next day all the people came out to build you a new one? Or so as to not put contractors out of work every one gave you 10% of their pay until your house is rebuilt. How about if some one is caught stealing food the manager calls the to the people and the person is given a grousery cart and told to fill it and take it home. Would it not be a good place to be if you were sick and could not pay for medical attention the Dr. would call out to the people and they would all give 10% until your bill was paid. Where all people are equal. To me that is the world of Christ teachings. CG 10-20-03, - 07:39 AM Glad you are back, Vicky Thank you for your input. Let me ask you a question. You say that you do not believe in the Bible. You implied that it was an unreliable document. But you end by saying, "To me that is the world of Christ teachings." From where did you learn about this Jesus if not from the Bible? |
