I'm halfway through reading The Cocaine Wars (a book that was banned from this country in the late 80's, due to explicit political references found within its pages). It's quite an enlightening collection of information, some of which details how our little country of The Bahamas played a significant role in the spread of cocaine within this hemisphere.
As drug arrests continue to make headlines, regardless of some of the major players in the trade being locked up, I wonder if the BAHAMIAN GOVERNMENT is sending anyone to this event:
The Drug Policy Alliance 2003 Biennial Conference:
Reason - Compassion - Justice
November 5-8, 2003 in East Rutherford, New Jersey
http://www.drugpolicy.org/events/dpa2003/index.cfm?ms=drconf
Join almost 1,000 drug policy experts, politicians, treatment and criminal justice professionals, activists, and concerned citizens for a three-day gathering that promises to be the most engaging, exciting, and informative drug policy event ever assembled.
The Drug Policy Alliance's 2003 Biennial event is the world's principal gathering of people who believe the war on drugs is doing more HARM than good. No better opportunity exists to strategize and mobilize for reform. The conference will be a comprehensive three-day crash course on drug issues, connecting the dots between the RAVE Act, international drug policies, new advances in drug treatment, Canadian reforms, medical marijuana, and civil liberties.
The conference will include over 50 sessions (with panels, roundtables, and plenaries) and 10 activist training sessions. Conference sessions currently on the agenda include:
* Anti-Drug Task Forces: Focus on Texas
* Building a Movement in Communities of Color
* Cutting Edge Issues in Drug Policy Reform
* Discrimination Against People in Recovery
* Drug Testing in Schools
* Global Prohibition Systems
* Harm Reduction: Drugs and Beyond
* New Directions in Prevention Education
* Medical Marijuana: Law and Regulation
* The State of the State of New Jersey
* Syringe Access: Current Issues and Challenges for the Future
* Training: Making the Case for Legalization
* Youth Activism
