To the Free National Movement:
ENOUGH IS FINALLY ENOUGH!
Imagine my shock and dismay as I listened to the Honorable Brent Symonette explain to students, at a lecture at the College of The Bahamas, why he was not elected as the Leader of the Official Opposition in the House of Assembly. A short tense period to adjust to what I had just heard preceded my anger. He was rejected because he was WHITE! The Free National Movement, the party that I support, the body that berated the Progressive Liberal Party claiming that they were bias against the Bahamian white minority, rejected Mr. Symonette’s nomination because he was WHITE! That is tough pill to swallow if your throat is real small.
The Free National Movement went ahead and elected Mr. Tommy “Seatless Wonder” Turnquest as Leader of the Party even though the Bahamian Masses made it quite clear that they didn’t want anything to do with this man. The constituents of Mt. Moriah didn’t want anything to do with this man. One of the main reasons why the people didn’t want Mr. Turnquest is because he is shamelessly arrogant and unqualified to capably lead the Free National Movement party or hold the position of prime minister.
The FNM’s recent convention was held under the theme, “United and Ignited!” What a load of crock! United and Ignited to do what? Forge racial prejudice and discrimination along party lines? Fester discrimination in the work place and among political colleagues? United and Ignited to do foolishness like elect the useless, seat less, Tommy Turnquest to the position of Leader of the Party when the man hasn’t proven himself? United and Ignited for what?
The idiot/s who decided to keep Tommy as leader to demonstrate that the party was united and ignited should be fired and never be allowed to run for public office again. Such ridiculous crew members should never be placed at or near the helm of a ship for fear that they might wreak havoc of a Titanic magnitude. Those persons who knew why Brent Symonette’s nomination was rejected should do the honorable thing and resign for the mere fact of their guilt by association.
I am a twenty-five year old black male. Like Brent Symonette, I am Bahamian. Like Mr. Symonette, I, too, have goals and desires that I wish to see come to fruit. To know that I would not have an opportunity to achieve some dream or aspiration because of my skin color would tear me apart. I am sure that Mr. Symonette was quite disappointed to find that the party that he is involved in would weigh him, not by the content of his character but, by the color of his skin.
Enough is FINALLY Enough! I am so ashamed of the Free National Movement. This is so embarrassing and especially since such actions cannot be reasonably justified under any circumstances. Words cannot authoritatively express the hurt and disappointment that I feel over this issue. We have been mislead and deceived but this parading bunch of hypocrites who stroll around with their nose in the air under a torch whose fire is fueled by political racism and discrimination. I cannot support this party any longer under these conditions. Tommy has to go. Mr. Symonette is owed a public apology and fresh leadership elections have to take place in the Free National Movement.

Marvin R. Z. GibsonBefore Election 2007 the FNM will be having another convention whereby a race for leader will again come up. If at this time they don’t do what has to be done then the party will lose again and maybe it will be a house filled with independents.

I hope God allows that to be a reality! Just imagine...no party loyalty in the house?:cutie:

I can not even understand why anyone would mention race problems in the Bahamas.
It is not a real problem.
:)
I agree with the decision the FNM took on his leadership and for the very reasons BahamaWave suggests. I think they took a chance on him as Deputy leader of the party, but someone has to “test the waters.” Give the FNM credit for that at least.
Despite Y2K’s protestations, racism is somewhat alive, and somewhat “well” in the Bahamas. But not a big a thing as in the US. One day it will be gone here and, hopefully, in the US - but not today!
PS I am White! And I hold no ill will. After all a political party must be realistic if it hopes to win.

There is no need to be shocked or dismayed. The reality is that racism exist in the Bahamas. The choice the F.N.M made was in no way a vote against Brent Symonette, but rather a strategic move to help the party. There are many who will not support a white man as Prime Minister, and I believe that the "MANY" is in the majority. I am a member of this generation, and believe me ,there are a lot of the older folks who may not know it and some who do, but they are racists plain and simple The P.L.P in it's last convention should have chosen "racists" as their theme. They preached it every night. V. Alfred Gray, specifically said "WE AIN GOING BACK" and we all knew what and to whom he was referring. Our generation is ready for a white Prime Minister or leader of any party, but many of the the "old" heads in this country continue to try to embed the teachings of racism into the heads of our youths, and some of the youths actually believe them.
The way I see it, the people of the Bahamas are like the children of Israel wandering in the desert. Some of those who are wandering with us, do so because they CANNOT and WILL NOT see the promise land, not with that attitude. While we wander, new seeds will spring up, new generations with an open mind and with the ability to decipher the lies from the truth. One day they will look at our history and read between the lines. When those who carry the lies and the racist attitude are gone, we will cross over to a promise land where the color of your skin will no longer matter.
"A man will be judged not by the color of his skin, but by the content of his character."(Dr. M.L. King)
The Brent Symonettes of the Bahamas will have their chance.
Marvin I am so sorry that you feel that way, but there is a bigger picture. One question for you, Did you watch the P.L.P main Convention????

Mr Symonette said that he was rejected because he was white?????
AND YET STILL WILL ACCEPT THE OFFICE OF DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER IF THE FNM WINS THE UPCOMING ELECTION??
That doesnt make sense to me.........My view is that the party does what's right for the PARTY.....Fact is at this present time Hubert A. Ingraham as the leader is the best chance that the FNM has for winning the election.
COME ON MARVIN STOP WITH THIS RACIAL NONSENSE........If your agenda is to discredit the FNM and win votes for the PLP youre gonna need a whole hell of alot more gunpower than this:hammer:

I remember a thread about a similar topic a while back. What I stated then (and what I will now state again) is that any percieved voter-turn-off that Mr. Symonette might create as Leader has more to do with WHO he is and NOT what colour he is. Rightly or wrongly, because Mr. Symonette has ties to a very painful part of Bahamian history (and has not done anything to ease the tension that it causes, I might add) the average Bahamian may feel uncomfortable with him as Leader. To show that it is NOT about colour, I don't think many Bahamians (irrespective of political consideration) would object to someone like Pierre Dupuch being Leader of a major political party. For emphasis, the reason why Mr. Symonnette's Leadership candidacy is "IFY" is because he is a relic (fairly or unfairly) of a painful memory.
N.B. Mr. Symonette, if you read this and want to be Leader some day, please contact me via the Private Messages and I will give you the formulae for being successful for a minor consultancy fee - money-back guaranteed!!!!
