View Full Version : Working for free at Kerzner Int
1bigfrog 12-12-06, - 09:44 AM I friend of mine recently interviewed for a job at Atlantis, Kerzner International for their Phase 3 expansion. She "believes" she has the job. There has been no confirmation. She already had three interviews, in fact, she started a training program with the company. She is excited. Her first real job, save from working at the family business.
But this is the issue: The training program is four days a week four hours a day; actually 9am-1pm. Its almost a full day work shift. My friend is still employed at her old job; being a family business her hours are somewhat flexible even though it is a strain on the business. She is considering resigning from the family business to pursue the opportunities at Kerzner. However, currently Kerzner does not pay the applicants who particiaptes in the training program. Understandable I guess, as they are just training, but her question is how she is going to survive if she quits her job to concentrate on and dedicate more time to the training program with receiving any type of income...I told her she is still lucky, at least she has an understandable boss who lets her abandon her job to attend a training/interviewing process to be employed at another institution.

Feck Kerzner. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush!

This maybe a bit strain but can she continue to work at the family business after she is finish the training program at 1pm? She can have a part-time position at the buisness until she goes on with Atlantis.
BTW Kerzner wrong for not paying them during the training program.

well she is still employed at the family business, even though her brother/boss is becoming uneasy about the entire affair. He wants her to pursue her dreams but now he has to hire someone else part time to work the hours she is not there. He claims he is paying out two paychecks. But the friend is the lucky one... She says that a number of persons in her 'class' has already resigned from their jobs thinking that they were finally hired by Atlantis. Apparently the training program is the last interview stage.

Well, it is a difficult situation esp. for those who had a job, I don't think I would have resign from my job, I would have taken vacation or something. How long is the training program? Her brother is not really paying more esp. if it's part-time cheques....did he figured to be paying more?

Well they should take what they can get. If enough people decide not to stand for it, he wont be able to do it.

don't worry...in the next year or so the entire Bahamas will be working directly in tourism; even them set who should only be serving sandwiches at fast food restaurants...
Fast food employees will be designated for immigrants only; just like gas station pump attendants.
chancellor 12-14-06, - 09:57 AM Geeezzz people ever heard of making a sacrifice?
If ever to make a sacrifice to get SOMEWHERE in the world, at least do it now and put everything you can into it.....that is what I would tell her. I'm sure I may have family that might say otherwise, but not everything has to have a dollar value. even if she does not get it, she can say that she did hospitality training at Atlantis THE premier destination in The Bahamas. That can carry weight if she chooses to apply at other hotels and other hospitality establishments, caterers, event planners, wherever else that tourism directly affects.
diarra 12-14-06, - 02:30 PM I agree. My internship was 9 months ..."unpaid" 8- 9pm n sometimes later. I ein had no family business pay coming in, had my degree even so it wasn't an "entry level" situation (and not saying the subject in question was deficient in any of these areas) but say that to say... If you want it cause it gonna benefit you... tugg it out! If you don't someone else will and then where are you left.... complaining to Government i guess.

Tourism is the well-spring. What has me concerned is that people who get into tourism, who neccesarily do not want to stay, end up staying!?!?
:dgi:
The idea is, if you want a job, you can have one. You do not have to stay in tourism, or the Govt. but, if you are on hard times, you can do that until things shape up.
That is the mentality we should instill with the anchor projects. The thing is, it is not up to the Government or any employer to give you a dream, it is up to you to go for what you like. If it does not pan out, then you can fall back on the wall or Govt and Tourism.
That is what I did, and if things get rough again, it is where I will run to again!
:hammer:
