View Full Version : Island Wide Blackout - Bahamas Electricity Corporation (BEC)
Delroy 11-06-03, - 08:23 PM Today the island of Nassau experienced one of the lengthiest island wide blackout in our nations history. Who do you feel should be held responsible for this incident?
What measures should the government of the Bahamas take to make sure that this does not happen again.
Feel free to share your experience with us about how you dealt with this major blackout today.

Feel free to share your experience with us about how you dealt with this major blackout today.I am so glad you asked that!! I was out for 14 hours! However, I have a generator. I have learned through bitter experience that BEC cannot be relied upon.
Whom should be held responsible? The management! Such as it is! Questions should be asked, and answered in the House! But I doubt it will.
What measures should the government of the Bahamas take to make sure that this does not happen again? I think it is time that we, the people, realize that the "talent is not equal to the task." Not just at BEC but at many government departments. The country must have lost millions of dollars today due to the black-out. Maybe it is time we bring in people from overseas. It is clear that the local talent can’t cut it!
I also wonder why the local radio stations did not send reporters out to cover the story. The BEC "powers at be" should have welcomed that and reported every hour on the progress of the repairs. As it was, they left us in the dark!In any other country this would have been a major story. Here it is just BEC messed up again!
just came on here, eastern rd, 8.40pm...
we hve no generator.
I think that since it is the year 2003, things should be different now than they were years ago. Instead of spending t he money in the wrong places, they should start thinking about where they will spend it next. I hear they want to bring in a national lottery, so they can spend the money on Sports!! What on earth will sports do to help the countries many many problems. Time to spend the money where it should go, like infrastructure, cleaning, etc,
You can promote sports in the bahamas to say bring in tourists like they say they want to, but if there is bad infrastructure, no sidewalks, tons of abandoned buildings, terrible dirty streets and sides of streets that have weeds (no grass) weeded by hand with machetes(???) leaving only dirt or more weed to grow right back, tons of crime, bums everywhere, etc etc, then tourists arent going to come back.,
Either way i think its pathetic that what happened today would happen, if they would at least FINALLY upgrade the equipment! And by the way there is a transformer 20 feet from my appartment that supplies an entire area of the eastern rd area, which continuosly goes bang and dies, then if I dont call BEC the power stays off. Also, why was the eastern side of the island off until 8.40pm while the western side was on from like 3pm??????

It had nothing to do with who lives out west. The answer is simple ,where is the power generated from. :shhh: please think sometime.

But if you look closely you will see that I ended my remark with a question mark! I know nothing at all about electricity, something I share in common with many at BEC. But, anyhow, thank you for your clarification.

Actually, not a single generator was running at Clifton Pier today. Can't vouch for Blue Hill Road.
