A week after a couple were arrested by police and charged with grievous harm to an 8 month old child, reports from the courts indicated on Thursday that doctors had to amputate four fingers from the child's left hand.
The pair, 25-year-old Geno Taylor and 22-year-old Stacy Cash were arraigned last week for causing harm to the infant . Last week, doctors at Princess Margaret Hospital [PMH] alerted police at the Central Detective Unit [CDU] that they had in their possession a baby girl whose left arm was so severely burnt that it may have to be amputated. The doctors said that the infant's arm was also broken and that the wound appeared to be about two weeks old.
A neighbor of the two who live on Cunningham Close off Kemp Road alleged that she had heard the child crying for two weeks prior to its being taken to the hospital. A police official also told the media that the two had given conflicting reports about how the child had been injured.
The couple were scheduled to appear for a bail hearing on Monday, however it was postponed until Thursday. When the two appeared before Chief Magistrate, Roger Gomez yesterday, they appeared solemn after Prosecutor, Inspector Althea Porter told the court that when she visited the child in hospital, doctors had confirmed that four of the fingers on the baby's hand had been amputated. The child is still recovering in hospital.
When questioned by Chief Magistrate Gomez, the mother admitted that she also had another child, a son, who had been taken away from her by social services prior to this case. Magistrate Gomez commented that the home of the accused would be assessed to determine whether it is suitable for children and added that the court is to protect the interest of children.
Magistrate Gomez told Mr Taylor and Ms Cash that in cases like theirs, the court would not normally grant bail. However, he pointed out that under the Bail Act, they were entitled to bail. The pair were given bail of $10,000 with one surety and they have to report to Wulff road police station on Wednesdays and Fridays before 5 pm.
The case has been adjourned until Tuesday, March 6, 2007 when it will be heard in Court 9 on Nassau Street. Geno Taylor was represented by lawyer Keod Smith, while Stacy Cash appeared without representation.
Up to press time it was not known whether charges would be upgraded.
