You know, we sometimes question why the world sits back and sees the suffering in many African countries and wont do much about it..and last night after watching the heap load of criticism Oprah has gotten for building a $40 million school for girls in Africa who otherwise wont get an education - I thought about the modern day undercurrents behind the world's apathy about Africa.

Its like in the minds of many, Africans are supposed to suffer, and so doing things like building the school is a waste. People are mad at Oprah for not building the school in America, saying the money could be "better spent" there.

Why better spent? Because African children arent worth anything? They dont deserve a future or are not entitled to one because of who they are? What makes American children or any other children more worthy of a chance at a decent life than an African child?

Nevermind the fact that of all the industrialised nations, the U.S has the highest per-capita child poverty rate - over 20 percent - and its supposed to be the richest nation on earth...so those who criticise need to ask why it is that such a rich nation isnt doing more for its own children.

Then others criticised Oprah for giving the girls such an opportunity, saying they wont "fit in" with their families anymore once they have acquired such a good education.

You can only have this view if you believe that these girls, and by extension African youth, are supposed to stay poor, uneducated and without a chance in life, and that therefore trying to give them an opportunity to better themselves is "unjustly changing their way of life."

I suppose education is the only way to end the suffering in Africa.Educating a people not to have more children than they can support.Education to teach farmers not to over plant, clearcut and devastate a land that wasn't meant for agriculture, while destroying it's beauty and creatures.Education to teach people not to support murderous, greedy leaders that care for nothing for anyone but themselves and more power.Education is the answer, but it is a far more daunting task than the great Oprah Winfrey or a million of her can achieve.Africa is a bottomless pit of heinous behavior among her leaders,we would not be here discussing this if it were not for some of them.God forgive me for saying so,because of the circumstances, but we are among the lucky Africans today.

5500 people die everyday in Africa from complications due to HIV/AIDS...

The doctor discussed in the documentary 'The Origin of AIDS' is supposed to be a regular guest at the Lyford Cay Club
oh the irony

Persons are actually upset about building a SCHOOL for these children, saying its "too nice" for African girls.

Oprah asked the question, "So what do you want, for them to always remain poor?" Obviously thats exactly what they want.

They say success is the best revenge - and its like subliminally, the nations that have robbed African nations and kept them down over the centuries see it as wrong for those they raped and pillaged to come out of their destitution.

Sidebar: Yes, I am well aware of warfare in Africa and that Africans have been killing eachother for centuries. And so long as these people stay poor and destitute and uneducated they will continue to be victims of self hatred and the hatred of those outside their borders.

The US bombed a location in Somalia where they claim that they suspected that Al Qaeda members were congregating They claim they killed 11 Al Qaeda operatives, and scores of civillians. Watch and see how nobody will give a sh!t about those dead people.

1. The people who are mad at Oprah for doing what she did are idiots. As far as choice of country is concerned, the only reasonable argument would be to question why she chose South Africa of all the African countries, since it's one of the wealthiest countries, but even so her actions deserve respect.
2. As far as the suffering of Africa goes, this is ensured by Capitalism and the consumerism culture of the west. This system makes Africa and other "3rd world" regions a source of extremely cheap and "disposable" labor, a dumping ground for weapons, testing ground for medications before they hit the western market, etc.
I could elaborate on this forever, but the main point is that in order to bring equality to the world the capitalist system has to be dismantled. With the current system, all we're gonna see is these rare occasions that help a few lucky ones but don't change the big picture.
