View Full Version : Where is the public service?
Alien 01-13-07, - 03:30 PM Where are they?
Where is the permanent secretary, responsible for trade?
What is her view on our position?
Where is the Director of Labour and his plan to help control labour?
Where are these people?
Do we pay them for nothing?
Why dont get any public assesment...we ge nothing from the people, who are supposed to be permanent.
What gives!?!
It is 2007 and instead of voting out PLP or FNM, we need to weed out lazy civil servants. From Lyons straight in down to the janitress, who takes off a half day every other day.
I feel cheated and robbed from. If they can not give me a fair days work, for a fair days pay, maybe we they should be purged.

No. It's the entire top tier. You will only replace ne party for the other, with no real change. the public service needs another shake-up. Not the shake-up ala Ingraham style, where he spent huge amounts of cash, for what he wanted to. We need a shake up in duties, personell and a restructure in what we do and how we do it.
No Sir. I understand your love for party. But, voting out one party will not promise that this problem is or will be solved.

Keep government
out of business
Dear Sir,
In his book, The End of Poverty: Economic Possibilities For Our Time, in the Chapter "Making the Investments Needed to End Poverty," Jeffrey D Sachs, internationally renowned for his work as economic adviser to governments around the world, writes: "Experience has shown that private entrepreneurs do a much better job of running businesses than governments. When governments run businesses, they tend to do so for political rather than economic reasons. State enterprises tend to overstaff their operations, since jobs equal votes for politicians, and layoffs can cost a politician the next election. State-owned banks tend to make loans for political reasons, rather than on the basis of expected returns. Factories are likely to be built in the districts of powerful politicians, not where they can best serve the broader population. Moreover, governments rarely have the in-house expertise to manage complex technologies, and they shouldn't, aside from sectors where the government's role is central such as in defense, infrastructure, health and education."
As Sideburns might write, "Mother Sukie, how he know dat about we!"
Yours, etc.,
WILLIAM P HOLOWESKO
Rock_1 03-15-07, - 04:23 AM The public service (well at least most of it) is a joke especially in offices such as DPS and Education. What are the working hours by the way for Govt offices? 8 to 4 with an hour for lunch (correct me if im wrong). It seems as if the hours are 10 to 3:30 with 2 hrs for lunch! The luxury of agovt office job. I know of people who said they slept, literally on the govt's job on several occasions! The problem is the level of job security in the public srevice. "I cant get fired without due process" has evolved into "i cant get fired unless i go to jail". Most civil servants apart from the jobs which require a college education are achieved through politics, which continues to be a huge problem in our contry. Some of he workers in these offices dont have a clue whatsd goin on and you cant find info unless you show up there in person (waste of gas). The phones continually ring off the hook, and some have caller ID! what the...? caller ID in a business place? What for? Oh i remember now, to duck frequent callers. But like another poster said a shake up is needed that has little to do with political affiliations and agendas and then will those at the bottom tier step up their game.
Alien 03-15-07, - 06:42 AM Someone had to go deep for this one. LOL...
Rock1 you stand accused. Why else do you hate the public service?

I dont hate it you know. Its just that too many times we accept mediocrity (sp) here in this country. Many of these workers are not putting out what is expected of them. It needs to be fixed. Communication in most cases seems to be the biggest problem. Im sure that there are many people at the top rung who are discouraged because they are restricted due to politics on the job from implementing effect procedures as it relates to improving the service.
I understand that it is not wise or even humane in a sense to just fire most of the workers. The governement however needs to find a way to provide more jobs and perhaps subject these workers to training as they require other civil servants such as police and teachers. These people should be able to provide me with whatever information that I seek or at least direct me to someone who is willing to address my concerns without giving me the run around and without all the fluff.
Im sure you have been to a government office before and seen so many empty cubicles and people who are just sitting around as opposed to doing work. Or maybe its just my timing. Reform is needed, period. I hope the next minister that comes along attempts to revamp the service without fear of losing his seat in 2012.

I do not think that Govt. is too big. It is just that, they have too many stumble bums and dumb bunnies, running around on sex favours and election favours and nothing can be done.
We need to whip them into shape, and run them ragged. Run them extremely ragged. The ones who can not keep pace, will either drop out or, they will be forced out because they can not handle the faster, more strict pace.
I say RUN THEM HARD.

lynette 03-16-07, - 10:26 AM Man I work in the public service and even I say it sucks.
I been to one meeting one time where they was encouraging ppl to upgrade themselves and what not. Then they talk bout promotions and man them ppl carry on so bad. I was shame to be one of them. I wanted to leave the room.
Most of them feel that if they been in a position for five years they deserve promotion. The people was trying to tell them that because you been in one position that long dont mean
1. That you was doing the job (you already have) properly, up to standard or even well and
2. That you are capable of doing the next job one step up.
Them people act like promotion is a right and does not have to be earned. They do what they feel like when they feel like.
Most dont have proper job descriptions or are on the wrong career path and aint qualified to be where they at. Plenty of them cant spell, grammar is their grandmother and dont know how to use a computer (in this day and age).
Most of them know their limitiation and dont want to do nothing bout it. Man reform is desperately needed. Think of how much better we could be if even one government department was functioning efficiently and effectively.
Alien 03-29-07, - 06:46 PM Good luck.
It does not take much to run people hard. Just do it. When they drop out, you put in the second in command; the person who has been dying for the spot in any event and then you set a new standard.
:shhh:
