View Full Version : Child abuse in public school?
1bigfrog 01-27-07, - 11:36 AM "When I caned him I told him to put his hands away because if you don't put your hand away it might be broken, there's a possibility his hand might be damaged." press release by school's principal.
Wow...If that isn't a flippant answer to the press, I don't know one...
Imagine...sending your child to school to learn...He got disiplined bythe principal, subsequently the child was punished to harshly with a cane that it broke and destroyed the young man's hand, to the point he has to wear a cast. Surely this is child's abuse and this act needs to be investigated.
The principal purposefully and maliciously struck this 12 year old child with all of his might knowing fully well that it could break a child's hand with ease. Then to add insult to this brutal injury, the principal has the gall to say, " It was a cane-if you put your hand in the way of the cane when the cane is used there's a possibility that could happen."
Wow...the very idea that he struck the child so hard that it broke and disfigured the childs hands suggest abuse. If his mother had punished him like that, police would have arrested her on sight.

What's up? Nothing wrong with this you say? No one drops their children to school so that they can be picked up partially and temporarilly disabled.

not all saying that this is right, but where HAVE y'all been all of these years? catholic and religious schools are notorious for their brand of corporal "pick your stick" punishment ... at the catholic elementary school here we used to get hit so bad on our hands that our fingers would swell up.
after a few too many of these episodes, my father finally came to the school and warned the priest that if he hit me that bad again, he'd have a dislocated shoulder.

I hear you. Corporal punishment can only be as "effective" as the people who administer it and the system that allows it to take place - because some of these teachers and administrators dont know how far to go.
On the flip side you have parents raising the future Scarfaces, who dont discipline their kids and dont want others to do so either..nonetheless though there are issues ofcourse on all sides of the corporal punishment debate.

Well we are waiting for more details form bigfrog. But either way corpral punishment in that magnetude, whereas to threaten the student's original physical condition beyond normal is wrong. these things don't get attention until something really deadly happens. then you want to wonder why we have angry students growing from primary and through high school.

I grew up in the catholic school system straight up to my senior year of high school. I don't recall any "pick you stick stuff", but I remember the most the teachers would use in the primary school is a short ruler......never used for measuring I assure you.

1bigfrog 01-27-07, - 07:06 PM Pupil's finger badly damaged after beating by principal
by Alison Lowe, Tribune Staff Reporter
A mother is outraged after her son's finger was badly damaged during a beating by his principal-leaving him unable to write-after the child disrupted a school assembly on Monday. Now she is calling for corporal punishment in Bahamian schools to be ended.
The mother said that her 12 year old son was subject to a "severe" caning by his principal after he was caught talking through a morning assembly. "I don't even beat my children like that," she said. Doctors have told him that he must keep his hand in a cast for a week. "There was an assembly and he was talking so the principal take him out the crowd and he beat him, and he was beating him so hard he was rubbing his hip with his hand," explained the mother.
When the boy moved his hand over the area where his principal was caning him in a response to the pain, he said the principal warned him to move it or else risk it getting broken. "He wapped him a couple more times and he (her son) started rubbing his hip again- so (the principal) wap him across his hand and now his finger's broken," she said. The woman claims that her son passed out from the pain.
Her husband received a call from him shortly aftewards, telling him he felt ill and wanted to be taken home. "My son called out and said that he'd fainted, " she said. I am thinking now I am going to meet him to the hospital because he fainted because he didn't eat breakfast or something or because of the heat." She was later informed by her son that he had passed out after receiving the caning.
The woman said her son is an avid amateur boxer, and as well as hindering his capacity to write, the injury is going to set back his training. According to the mother, she would like to move her son to a different school-but he insists that he wants to stay. She added that now she fears her son may be victimised because she has spoken out about the incident.
Responding to the claims, the principal in question said, "Yes I was the person responsible." He explained that the incident occured after a special "National Heroes" assembly which students had been informed before hand was an important occasion. He claims, however, that despite the warning, several students were "very, very disruptive," resulting in his decision to cane the 12 year old.
"When I caned him I told him to put his hands away because if you don't put your hand away it might be broken, there's a possibility his hand might be damaged," he said. The principal said he had not noticed that the 12 year old moved his hand over the area where he was being caned. "I was not aware that his hand was broken or that any dmage was done-not until late yesterday evening," he said, adding that the boy was "excessively talking, very disruptive and rude in assembly." The principal claimed the damge was "not intential."
"It was a cane-if you put your hand in the way of the cane when the cane is being used there's a possibility that could happen," he said. though he regrets what happened, the principal reiterated that he had warned the boy not to put his hand in the way. As for claims that the boy had fainted as a result of the pain, the principal said the auditorium was very hot that morning as 600 students were in attendance. "During assembly it was pretty hot. I understand two or three of the students fainted before he did...or before he almost fainted, I gathered." He said the boy may have "almost fainted" but this was up to 20 minutes after he was reprimanded.
According to the princpal, he spoke to the boy's mother yesterday, and felt that the issue had been resolved. "I spoke to the mother last night, and we had a good conversation, y'know? I also spoke to the boy and he said he was feeling strong." The princial claims a meeting was set up between himself, the mother and the district superintendent yesterday morning but that the mother did not attend. Attempts to contact Minister of Education Alfred Sears for comment on his government cellphone yesterday were unsuccessful.
