“TORPEDOED AGAIN”

The goal of Political survival, as I am sure any respected politician will agree, has unlimited potential for disaster. As the Progressive Liberal Party enters into its convention let me expound upon a rather disturbing occurrence of events. As a resident and investor in my birthplace, Long Island has finally been provided with an opportunity to remove itself from the realm of places which time and all else has forgotton.

Allegedly, there has been a substantial proposal put forward for the development of the former Mariculture Inc. site at Hard Bargain, south Long Island intended to regenerate what used to be the site of the Diamond Crystal Salt Plantation on the western seaside of the island, to create an exclusive and open community for Bahamians as well as foreigners. Allegedly, this proposal has been presented to the government quite some time ago and as of yet there is no information as to its position. Surprisingly, this was exactly the type of activity the current Government vowed to do away with on their campaign. I am further amazed that after months and months of the proposal being in the hands of the government, the machinery of bureaucracy and other impediments along the way have delayed the multi-million dollar project. It reveals that there is some bifurcation as to what the government says and exactly what transpires.

Undoubtedly, upon the release of this information the government will purport to the contrary and provide some exculpatory remarks of why it has to do a thorough investigation of the developer, his financing and the like. However, the British developer is of the utmost integrity, the monies are already reposed in a financial institution in the Bahamas and the fact that the area has been formally declared an environmental disaster leads one to believe there should be no reason for delay. Perhaps there may be some altruistic motive in the postponement or for that matter seemingly impending refusal from our beloved administration. It has been rumoured that certain entities associated with such processes are awaiting their ‘Golden Handshakes,’ as is common with most third world nations. It would seem as if some ‘very evil people’ are determined to receive unjust enrichment.

It has been noted that the government is hoping that the investor will somehow lose interest in Long Island and move to a more PLP friendly environment. A concerned individual readily recommended Cat Island to the investor in the usual “informal” manner. However, the investor has assured certain persons that if it is not Long Island he will leave the Bahamas, as there is substantial competition for his financial investments elsewhere in the world. Presently, the government of a neighbouring Caribbean country known for its hospitality industry is actively pursuing the Brit for his massive investment project. The investor has fallen in love with what he calls the “Last Paradise on Earth,” being mesmerized by the sun swept beaches, unexplored habitat and the variety of wildlife prevalent. The Englishman has plans to develop the site into a true gem of the Bahamas not only for foreigners but also for the people of Long Island regardless of race, birthplace, religion or political allegiance.

Of course there are figures in the political realm that see this as an affront to the base of their political party’s mandate as Long Island was destined to be kept as the sheep rearing capitol of the Bahamas. An island so independent of political persuasion and without the assistance of either past governments has come thus far and is on the edge of surpassing those places, which have benefited from political favouritism. This begs the question if the true reason behind the delay is really the administrative red tape? This was quite apparent on a recent visit to the island by the Hon. Allyson Maynard-Gibson as she allegedly seemed quite unenthused about the project and wished to leave even before a cursory inspection of the site could be completed. I guess she must have had other more important business to attend. It should be kept in mind whilst unemployment rates remain at an unusually high level and ever increasing labour disputes the government should try all they can to employ at lest a proportion of those 18,000 persons without gainful occupation. It was quite interesting to note the order of importance and mention of proposed investments into islands of quite different political configuration and makes reiterate the question of victimization once again.

The residents and descendants of this island are all in very high hopes of the ossification of this development, as they want to see their island progress and grow with it. The remainder who live outside are wishing that the project was approved as they are tired of living a substandard life in the capital and hope to return home. You must ask yourself whether this independence was really worth it as I am sure the process would have taken the path of least resistance if the island were of another persuasion. There are no political brownie points to be won by either party. But that is the reason why the investor has chosen this island. Not because of its stunning beauty, mountainous relief, wildlife and possibility of adventure, rather it is the people whom he said are the true precious commodity of this land. Reminiscent of Christopher Columbus as he once stated “Fernandina is the finest place his feet had set upon.” It is bewildering to believe that because of the conscientious work effort, dogged resilience and unmatched integrity Long Islanders should be made to suffer by doing away with this much needed opportunity.

I truly regret that this information cannot be trusted to the representative of my island as he has more than enough to occupy him at present. Mr. Cartwright’s alleged bipartisan agreement with the present administration to keep swing votes out of the main stream has secured his acquiescence. I would only wish that this information be made available for all in keeping with the present administration’s views on transparency.

Best regards,

The people of Long Island

This is very interesting, Sparkle. I'm married to a Long Islander, who's also a realtor, but we hadn't heard about this potential development.

:bye: Another viewpoint from a home owner in Longisland about Larry Cartwright. I admit that I'm unfamiliar with your situation so this is not a crtiicism of your view. I have found Larry Cartwright to be interested in the basic nesessities for the people of Longisland. These include potable water , electricity , roads and education. Larry is a good listener and recognizes the best interest of the people. There is a lot of work to be done and he needs creative suggestions and support to better the lives of all.
I would like to see a better system of garbage disposal. The current land fill needs to be evaluated and modern methods of recycling utilized.
Let's help Larry to raise the quality life for all and then we can move on to grander projects.

Hello This is Chuck Fox -- A True Long Islander -- The creator of http://www.longislandishere.com .. I've lived in Long Island all my life and will NEVER live anywhere else. Long is a beautiful, quiet and unique place with people who is really friendly and down to earth. The fact is if the FNM wouldn't have been in power we would have been the "Sheeprunners of Long Island" -- What does that expression mean anyway -- I don't see anybody running any sheep here .. I think it's just a covered up racial slurr from those people who doesn't want to see the Long Island people get anywhere and be like shepherds in the bush ,, but you know what the FNM has done exactly what Long Island needed and now that we have electricity, roads and all the resources we need the island is moving to the TOP at lightning speed and there's nothing the government could do about it .. Yeah maybe they could hold back investors which they have done for years to try make us suffer but Long Islanders are independent people and that is why we are so unique. Of course the most important thing is we are on the MOST SCENIC island of The Bahamas and there is alot of envy for that. This guy who wants to invest wants to do it in Long Island because he know there's no other island like it in the world in my opinion -- Even Columbus seen that 500 years ago. So take it from a PROUD LONG ISLANDER that I am going to do what I could to tell everybody about MY PARADISE ...

"GOVERNMENT OR NOT -- LONG ISLAND IS GOING TO THE TOP'. SIMPLE.
Everybody PLEASE check out my website and Sign My Guestbook ok.

You tell it, Chuck. It is a historical FACT that Long Island felt the true wrath of the PLP during their 25 year reign. Now, I am not one to get political, but anyone with eyes and common sense could see what was going on in Long Island. The "FNM side" of the island has NOTHING - i.e. no running water, lights, telephones and the road was built when the UBP was still in power - when it was built for the WHOLE island. Meanwhile, the "PLP side", where about 1/3 of the population lives, had it all just as if they were a part of Nassau.

But it is true that adversity breeds a better people. NGM Major High, a school that could not get text books or chalk from the PLP government, consistently turned out top students, on par with graduates from St. Andrews and other top schools. Meanwhile, the North Long Island High School did nowhere near as well, and they had every benefit that could logistically be afforded. Not trying to defame North Long Island, just stating the facts, which can easily be verified with a bit of research.

So I feel it will remain true. The PLP or WHOEVER can try as they might, they will not keep the spirit of Long Island people down. They will continue to excel, and quietly run the country behind the scenes as they have done for generations. Because it is MUCH better to be labelled a "sheeprunner" than to be the sheep itself, like much of the rest of the Bahamas.

:jamaica: well i am glad that this topic has taken effect i :walk: am in total agreement with you in this matter and feel that progress should be in long island, but i also believe that it should also be generated from those in long island as well. in long island the problem is there is mass land but no one want to clear the land up. i my self own a large portion of land in the northern end of long island and have a proposal set forward to do a major development. :walk: but if long island is to survive they must generate ideas to bring in business to the island. :titongue: it is so sad to know that most of the business in nassau are run by long islanders but no one would invest in their own home island. the only few are the ones who receive the benefits while others suffer and as i see it anything you put in long island will posper. :shaky: just the mind of the people need to change, i am always think ing of home and can not wait to start developing my vision, all the rest of long island needs are men and women of vision. as for larry cartwright he is doing a great job and should be commented.WARNING IF YOU DO NOT MANY OTHER PERSONS WILL COME AND TAKE AWAY ALL YOU REVENUE THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN LONG ISLANDERS :bored:  :usa: :stlucia:

Well I am also of Long Island descent & I care neither for the PLP or the FNM.But a fact is a fact is a fact. The FNM did not & I repeat did not start the process of the electrification of Long Island. Please lets read Bahamas & get of these political trips, because for all the roads, phones, lights & running water on every island no political party did it,it was done by me & your tax dollars. :board2:
