“TORPEDOED AGAIN”
The goal of Political survival, as I am sure any respected politician will agree, has unlimited potential for disaster. As the Progressive Liberal Party enters into its convention let me expound upon a rather disturbing occurrence of events. As a resident and investor in my birthplace, Long Island has finally been provided with an opportunity to remove itself from the realm of places which time and all else has forgotton.
Allegedly, there has been a substantial proposal put forward for the development of the former Mariculture Inc. site at Hard Bargain, south Long Island intended to regenerate what used to be the site of the Diamond Crystal Salt Plantation on the western seaside of the island, to create an exclusive and open community for Bahamians as well as foreigners. Allegedly, this proposal has been presented to the government quite some time ago and as of yet there is no information as to its position. Surprisingly, this was exactly the type of activity the current Government vowed to do away with on their campaign. I am further amazed that after months and months of the proposal being in the hands of the government, the machinery of bureaucracy and other impediments along the way have delayed the multi-million dollar project. It reveals that there is some bifurcation as to what the government says and exactly what transpires.
Undoubtedly, upon the release of this information the government will purport to the contrary and provide some exculpatory remarks of why it has to do a thorough investigation of the developer, his financing and the like. However, the British developer is of the utmost integrity, the monies are already reposed in a financial institution in the Bahamas and the fact that the area has been formally declared an environmental disaster leads one to believe there should be no reason for delay. Perhaps there may be some altruistic motive in the postponement or for that matter seemingly impending refusal from our beloved administration. It has been rumoured that certain entities associated with such processes are awaiting their ‘Golden Handshakes,’ as is common with most third world nations. It would seem as if some ‘very evil people’ are determined to receive unjust enrichment.
It has been noted that the government is hoping that the investor will somehow lose interest in Long Island and move to a more PLP friendly environment. A concerned individual readily recommended Cat Island to the investor in the usual “informal” manner. However, the investor has assured certain persons that if it is not Long Island he will leave the Bahamas, as there is substantial competition for his financial investments elsewhere in the world. Presently, the government of a neighbouring Caribbean country known for its hospitality industry is actively pursuing the Brit for his massive investment project. The investor has fallen in love with what he calls the “Last Paradise on Earth,” being mesmerized by the sun swept beaches, unexplored habitat and the variety of wildlife prevalent. The Englishman has plans to develop the site into a true gem of the Bahamas not only for foreigners but also for the people of Long Island regardless of race, birthplace, religion or political allegiance.
Of course there are figures in the political realm that see this as an affront to the base of their political party’s mandate as Long Island was destined to be kept as the sheep rearing capitol of the Bahamas. An island so independent of political persuasion and without the assistance of either past governments has come thus far and is on the edge of surpassing those places, which have benefited from political favouritism. This begs the question if the true reason behind the delay is really the administrative red tape? This was quite apparent on a recent visit to the island by the Hon. Allyson Maynard-Gibson as she allegedly seemed quite unenthused about the project and wished to leave even before a cursory inspection of the site could be completed. I guess she must have had other more important business to attend. It should be kept in mind whilst unemployment rates remain at an unusually high level and ever increasing labour disputes the government should try all they can to employ at lest a proportion of those 18,000 persons without gainful occupation. It was quite interesting to note the order of importance and mention of proposed investments into islands of quite different political configuration and makes reiterate the question of victimization once again.
The residents and descendants of this island are all in very high hopes of the ossification of this development, as they want to see their island progress and grow with it. The remainder who live outside are wishing that the project was approved as they are tired of living a substandard life in the capital and hope to return home. You must ask yourself whether this independence was really worth it as I am sure the process would have taken the path of least resistance if the island were of another persuasion. There are no political brownie points to be won by either party. But that is the reason why the investor has chosen this island. Not because of its stunning beauty, mountainous relief, wildlife and possibility of adventure, rather it is the people whom he said are the true precious commodity of this land. Reminiscent of Christopher Columbus as he once stated “Fernandina is the finest place his feet had set upon.” It is bewildering to believe that because of the conscientious work effort, dogged resilience and unmatched integrity Long Islanders should be made to suffer by doing away with this much needed opportunity.
I truly regret that this information cannot be trusted to the representative of my island as he has more than enough to occupy him at present. Mr. Cartwright’s alleged bipartisan agreement with the present administration to keep swing votes out of the main stream has secured his acquiescence. I would only wish that this information be made available for all in keeping with the present administration’s views on transparency.
Best regards,
The people of Long Island
