View Full Version : Cops save three alleged homosexuals from angry crowd
WinterGrace 02-16-07, - 06:39 PM its just an allegation...
but my source said he was a gay man...
occured in the east...
well there's no reporting...
people often ignore the 'gay' angle...
some people don't want to 'out' themselves by filing a complaint...
and some just don't trust the police....
Exactly, just allegations....those examples don't sound like gay volience, in fact, I believe Bahamians don't trouble no one like that (esp strangers). We usually have crimes of passion, lovers against lovers (gay or straight)etc....

they remain allegations because no one reports it.....gay clubs are constantly bombarded with "straight" vigilantes who come to harass patrons and vandalize property....whether we wanna admit it or not we have the same problems....when the most recent gay club was opened over 25 vehicles were vandalized and a few ppl were attacked going to their cars.....i've had a few experiences myself and if i didnt have an "i een never scurred" attitude nothing would have come of my complaint to the police....

I am not denying your experiences but the examples of murder she posted, didn't look like a straight-gay crime. I was really responding to the flat-out murder cases. I don't think a Bahamian would kill a stranger esp if he is gay, seems like most of the victims are killed by people they know.
I am not sure who is attacking or vandalizing cars around the gay clubs but I do know that a police friend of mine has expressed how they were called on many occasions to "break-up" fights inside the gay clubs. It could be someone who have a "beef" with some persons and they vandalized some cars by the gay club. I don't know but I don't want to accuse hetersexuals, even though I wouldn't put it pass some, you would really have to do an investigation.
But encourage others to report those attacks, at least you would have something documented.
bahamianpride 02-16-07, - 07:49 PM I remember this one.....but the others I don't think they are hate crimes. They may be done by spurned lovers if anything else, but hate crimes...no.
I personally do not support homosexuals, as I may have stated before, but I won't physically abuse them without just cause for defending myself.
in the case with the two girls....
if the boyfriend killed the baby mother...well maybe its a crime of passion...
but what about the girlfriend...
was she a witness...or was it because she was gay also...
a hate crime would be defined as an offence where the offender had no connection to the victim and/or only committed the crime because the victim is gay....

bahamianpride 02-16-07, - 08:13 PM I'm talking about murder :gi:
i think it has
from my discussions in the gay community....many people think they have occured...
but if there's no legislation...a crime won't be labelled a hate crime....
some family members don't even inform officers that the victim was gay...so that angle can be investigated....
remember the police officer that was murdered about seven yrs ago...
he lived in foox hill.....he was gay...
my sources said that his death could've possibly been a hate crime

What I am saying is that Bahamians normally don't kill strangers because they are gay. All you have is allegations, little or no proof.
A gay person could be murdered for many reasons...they stole money/drugs, they mislead someone, etc etc
I am not saying it's not possible but the likelihood is very rare.
trubahamian 02-16-07, - 08:34 PM Just because their population is black and once ruled by the British, does not make Jamaica the Bahamas. Their culture and socail tolerances are their own,not ours.So lets not go off on a George Bush style witch hunt. Most of us tolerate or welcome gays, even though some may either dislike it or are disgusted by it.We treat them well and would do them no harn, but it is an issue that is extremely polarised and gays realise it.To try to change the attitude of all people in our society will take generations.Until that happens, gays will be in harms way.:)
Vicky 02-16-07, - 09:19 PM the police are invstigating a case about two girls found burnt in a pit...
the allegation is they were girlfriends....one of them was pregnant...
Locksley Batian was assaulted by a security officer and verbally assaulted by police, the police refused to register his complaint against the security guard...
a young man found recently dead in his burnt vehicle...allegedly he was gay and this was a hate crime...
and there are countless stories of gay people being assaulted by security officers a club staff during spring break...
RAB is in the process of creating a list of offences in conjunction with the american embassy, but people are afraid of being victimized further and don't report incidents of violence
And that is a big problem how do you protect invisible people. How do you protect people that are willing to take abuse because they are so afraid of further abuse.
Not more that str8 folk but named in the law.
Vicky 02-16-07, - 09:21 PM Bahamianpride I haven't heard of an increase in hate crimes against gays in the Bahamas. Can you tell me about this case some more? When and where did this occur?
Gay are battered and verbally abused daily in the Bahamas.
Vicky 02-16-07, - 09:23 PM Well I do agree with you that people dont want to compromise themselves by filing complaints. It is sad that this happens, its not right but who are we to judge and inflict punishment on others for their sexual preference?
That is why we need str8s to stand with GLBT to put an end to this discrimination.
It won't make you gay.
Vicky 02-16-07, - 09:26 PM I remember this one.....but the others I don't think they are hate crimes. They may be done by spurned lovers if anything else, but hate crimes...no.
I personally do not support homosexuals, as I may have stated before, but I won't physically abuse them without just cause for defending myself.
so if a str8 person gave you just cause you would not defend yourself??
