Driving up Parliament Street today, my husband and I noticed the sorry state that the only surviving buildings on the old Royal Victoria Hotel property are in. Also, the pillars at one of the entrances not only look as if they are in danger of collapsing, but the lovely old murals with the name of the former hotel on them are at risk of being lost at the same time.

I am sure tourists would be delighted to be able to view these old buildings in a restored condition as they browse around downtown Nassau. Of course, it’s a terrible shame that the old Royal Victoria Hotel was lost in a fire many years ago, just like it’s a shame the old Montague Hotel was imploded. These old buildings would have been interesting places for tourists (and residents too) to visit. Anyway, what’s gone is gone. Let’s try and save what’s still here and worthy of being saved.

In a similar vein, we were driving down Cumberland Street the other day and noticed two tourists standing on the west side of the road, pointing and looking aghast at the piles of garbage around an old unused building on the other side of the road. I think I read this old house might be purchased and restored some time in the near future. In the meantime, the garbage should be cleaned up as soon as possible, even if the government has to step in and get it cleaned up. It’s a disgrace.
