Would the Bahamas benefit if we could get rid of this two party system? What if we could outwardly do what is best for all Bahamians? I wonder if the political parties would submit to what is best for all Bahamians and the Bahamas?

To tell you the truth gemmanyah,

Dear Gemmanyah:
I am not clear on what you are really asking for.Is it a one party system you are advocating? Because if you are, whether you know it or not you are bordering on Communism or Dictatorship.
I stand to be corrected on this, because to the best of my knowledge, there are only three types of governing systems in the western-hemisphere;and they are:Communism, Dictatorship and Democracy which is a two party system. However,in the western world 99% of the countries: Democracy is the system of choice. And in most Democracy, there are
scores of parties, but only two governs;and they are the governing party and the offical opposition.
A tipical example of what am talking about is right here in the Bahamas. We have (FIVE) or (SIX) different political parties, but only the P.L.P
and the F.N.M governs.
In my opinion though, the C.D.R. is the best thing that ever happen for this country.

Do you mean more or less parties gemmanyah?

The problem is not the amount of parties but the way we vote. The average adult is so much in love with being associated than changing the "Status Quo".
If the electorate actualy study the real isssues that are being neglected, then we would have gotten ride of the no doers long time.
Eg. the high interest rates on loans & mortgages
the lousy public bus system
the lack of a school bus program
the tax system
family island development, etc
i believe every patriotic Bahamian have an obligation to educate daily to persons the right way to vote. Our country is being turned into another Jamaica by the same 2 parties. Let's give another group of Bahamians the chance to stop this degregation.

Good points Dario
But which other group are you thinking of?

Dear Registered Users, I believe I have an idea of what gemmanyah is talking about. I used to think along similar lines, for example, I used to say, "It is a pity that our Government has to be run by politicians". I have gotten so fed up with our system that in the last election I did not even register! The first time in about 50 years! I have seen so many foolish and disgusting things politicians have done over the years! I felt that it was a sin to bother voting for them! (Read Proverbs 29:2). (I am NOT against Democracy, I just don't like the way we practise it!).
I heard once that just the way the Bahamas is run now, with all its faults, problems, crimes, etc, -- that is exactly how the politicians (especially the lawyer politicians) want it to be! Now this sounds crazy, doesn't it!? But I understand that this was the opinion of a veteran Bahamian politician some years ago. And when you check it out against how they take so long to do anything worthwhile, it seems to be a true statement! How sad! A foreigner I used to work with some years ago said to me, "Man, you know, the things I see your Government doing now, they should have been done about 5 or 10 years ago!"
It seems that even Churchill hated party politics -- he talked about how party politics makes a party member blind .....! They become so loyal to the party, they can't see when the party is doing wrong.
Talk with some of the veteran politicians, former cabinet members, and you will hear some of the strangest, craziest things!
No matter how much I knew about laws, etc, or even if my countrymen wanted me to enter politics, I don't think I could ever bring myself to be a party politician. The main reason for this is that I can't be a member of an organization that would do things which are bad for the nation or the people and just keep my mouth shut about it! NO WAY! I will politely talk to you about it privately and if you can't see the light, take it up with you publically in Parliament, no matter which party you belong to. And that is Biblical, but you can't do that in party politics -- you have to be a so-called team player. And it is perfectly all right to be a team player if you are standing up for justice and fairness.
To me there are so many things wrong with party politics as it is practised here in our Bahamaland. Some of the so-called card-carrying members just seem to be there looking for slackness, trying to get jobs or benefits they are not qualified for or do not deserve. And I could go on and on, but I think you get my drift. As I said before (in speaking about the 50 cent concert), I believe that a group of young God-fearing people will one day help to straighten out this obsolete, unfair system we have of doing things. And I believe that persons like Apostle Cedric Moss and Delroy will play an important part in this change.

What I am reffering to as partisan politics is the divisiveness of the political process and not a one party system. I retrospect more parties to choose from would be a solution not less.
For example I've seen veteran PLP's grow filthy rich because of their allegiance to the party and FNM's grow poor and desperate because of their allegiance to their party, how can we fix this? How can me become a government for all Bahamians and vote according to your liking at the time of the election. How can we learn to share the goods and opportunities equally among all Bahamians? Let me know if you approve of this view? Is this a niaeve view or does it exist elsewhere?
Thank you,
gemmanyah
