View Full Version : Listened to Hodder today
Dudley 03-21-07, - 12:48 AM am not quibbling as to whether she's got the chops, but don't you have to have a Ph.D as head of a university that is seeking accreditation?
I don't think it's so much as a 'chops' issue, but the fact that she doesn't have a PhD doesn't neccessarily make her unqualified for the job. There are quite a few Unis and Colleges that don't have PhDs at the helm, purely because that position is really more of a figurehead, an administrator more than an academic.
One of the Jack Lessenberry essays says,
"Essay: What Kind of President? - 6/30/06
Everything I hear indicates that Mark Murray has had a successful five-year run as president of Grand Valley State University. He is stepping down now to begin a new career as head of the 175-store Meijer chain, Michigan‘s largest private retailer.
But without ever having been on Grand Valley’s campus, I can tell you that there were some unhappy campers back in 2001 when Murray was chosen for the job. I know this because I know how most university people think. They firmly believe they should be led by someone like themselves, who has been a professor and who has a Ph.D. Most think anyone who doesn’t have a doctorate is legitimate.
Fact is, that’s often wrong. That’s not to say that professors don’t often make good university presidents. That’s certainly the case with Mary Sue Coleman, president of the University of Michigan, which, I should note, is the parent institution of Michigan Radio.
She was trained as a scientist and earned a doctorate before essentially switching to a career in university administration.
But there have been brilliant academics who were howling failures at university administration. And there have been successful leaders in higher education who, like Murray or Peter McPherson, who led Michigan State till last year, didn’t have doctorates at all.
Instead, they were men and women who were talented experts in organization and management.
Frankly, we shouldn’t be surprised. To assume that a brilliant scholar will automatically make a great university president is silly. It is as if the Detroit Tigers were to say to their best pitcher: “Okay. You’ve proven you can play baseball. So starting Monday, we are taking you off the field and putting you in charge of ticket sales.”

After all-Greenspan ran the Fed quite well without an earned PhD.
Remember, just getting a Masters degree doesn't make you smarter than when you were an undergraduate. I think she's already managed to turn the college around-a lot more positive press, especially after the Dr Smith debacle, and even after THAT, I understand that some COB faculty members (with PhDs) tried to get him reinstated after the search for a new President seemed to have stalled.

patrick swygert of Howard is another stellar college president who doesnt have his PhD.
the fact that she isnt Bahamian and how she came about still upsets me...there are qualified Bahamians who couldve done the job just the same. I am one who will be glad to see her go.
her announcements dont amount to much to me : people talk all the time...and that 1 million from wilson is guilt trip money...if she was really serious she would give examples of what she has planned and is implementing now! she would say:
well we need to do "xyz" and we are doing x1x2x3
and this department is implementing y1y2y3
and we have this fundraiser and this charity event scheduled for for this date and that date
we've secured funding from this abc foundation or world body to implement at (which ever) research center A within the school, z1z2z3...
we implemented a program to recruit more males to the school
...we have partnered with all the environmental organizations in the Bahamas to have an environmental symposium scheduled for...
...this center has a economic and financial education lecture series coming up free and open to the Bahamian public...
these research projects are in their initial phases...
we've partnered with area schools and learning education centers to promote literacy
a few new summer programs geared towards exposing Bahamian youth to higher education will be effective summer 07 (the applications are available from school counselors)
we've partnered with the govt to...
in essence, dont tell me what you would like to see, "Ms. Hodder" you are the president (no matter how you got there) show us by your actions that you are serious...that snake money doesnt count...get to work!
many of us on this board gave these same examples as for the role COB should play in our nation building before she even got there...she is saying nothing new.
Tafadhali 03-21-07, - 01:01 AM UWO or UWI? Anyway in some circles UWI doesnt have that great a reputation either. Has anyone who has been abroad noticed that as well?
No I hear the opposite...I hear that is a school for the elite (well in Jamaica) I hear from a friend who is a student there (in Jamaica) that they work you hard...she has many sleepless nights burning the midnight oil.

Just getting a degree also doesnt mean a person is smarter or better at the same thing, than a person without a degree.

well that goes without saying...but that degree gives you the edge over someone with a high school education.

Pat swygert was in some hot water over that issue in 1997 when I was there! Speaking in glittering generalities really gets the crowd going though doesnt' it?
I mean, you would be surprised at how many people, wait and listen for a "good word" to be said.
