One man was in jail last night and another was being treated in hospital after being shot by police following a major Exuma drug bust on the weekend.
A spokesman for the police Drug Enforcement Unit (DEU) confirmed that police on Friday seized 110 pounds of marijuana (with an estimated street value of $110,000) and a Boston Whaler boat which was being used to smuggle the drugs near Farmers Cay, Exuma.
He said a 28-year-old man and a 35-year-old of Mayaguana and Acklins were arrested in connection with the matter. Police did not identify the suspects.
The suspect who was shot by police during the operation was last night in custody at the Princess Margaret Hospital, where he was being treated for his wounds. The DEU spokesman did not reveal information on the severity of his injuries.
The drug squad spokesman did, however, indicate that the Boston Whaler boat allegedly used to smuggle the drugs is now in police custody.
The Guardian was first informed of the drug bust by a source with knowledge of some circumstances surrounding the operation. The suspects were believed by police to have been involved in trading of narcotics, and had been under surveillance for some time.
According to the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, the suspects were initially able to evade police - one swimming a "very long" distance from one Exuma Cay to the next, before eventually being nabbed.
