Here how we can save our youths.Government need to take the lead and open the treasury purse to the defense force and police force.boths agencies should have all the personnels and equiptment it takes to operate professioally. They should have planes, helicopters, boats of all size so they can protect our boarders (air, land and sea).
In each of the agencies there should be a department that fully train in carpentry, plumbing, masonary, agriculture, fishery and what ever else you can teach a person. Now this is where it gets tricky. (thinking out side the box)
School hours should begin from 6.00am to 8.00am,regular 8.30am to 3.00pm and 4.00pm to 6.00pm Monday to Friday.Have the defense force personnel come in for 2 hrs to teach student all of the above careers, same with the police in the evening. 6.00am classes could be for youths who are out of school, evening classes for students who are still in school. controlling some of their free time.
We then need a government leader who will put country first and not them getting to be millionares in 5 short years and start to bring in other investment besides more hotels.eg: (clothing manufractures, canning, ect.) the wireless company in freeport is a perfect example of what am saying. I can see 1 day tourist will not beable to travel here, then what will happen to our bread and butter. We need to get farming, fishing and canning manufacturing on the go. When we as a nation can grow enough food to feed all of us and we have no tourist, atleast our belly will be full.(just imagine being brook and hungry).:bahamas:

Good post.

I agree w/ you on just about everything you said. However, I did cringe at the manufactoring aspect of your text because of our extremely high labor costs. We can still immplement manufacturing, however, it MUST be a high-end product.

For example: We can establish a Versace manufacturing plant here in the Bahamas, or any other product, but is has to be high-end. Which is why all of the resort developments in this country have to be luxury or 5 star developments, so that you can justify the high cost of the products and services provided.

I already have my land. What I would have liked to do is build the house now an use it as a summer home for my family. But I can't figure out how to rent it out or get someone to watch it for the other 10 months of the year.

Yes it is a shame, that Foreign people are buying up land there. I have seen ads here in Florida selling land in plenty of out-islands, and some sites even offer entire Cays. For much much cheaper than if they were to buy it in the Florida Keys.

---Edit---
There are so many American jobs being outsourced. I find it shocking that no companies in The Bahamas has sprung up to take on these roles. Here's a list off the top of my head that can be done anywhere there is Broadband internet and people wanting to work.

Customer Service Online/Telephone
Light manufacturing (soldering chipsets/clothing)
Direct mail advertising
Offshore Poker leagues
Game Design and Game Services (this is a huge industry)
Music Studios and Production
Software and Computer programmers

It is a double edged sword among many here ya know.Jobs can only be created through two methods that I know, either in the public sector,"which requires more taxes" or in the private sector "which requires more development." Too many peeps are frightened of the private sector as it is mainly provided in the form of foreign investment. How else is a developing nation, with an appetite for living well, supposed to afford to develop without foreign investment? With proper Gobment controls,to assure we do not become a nation full of "second homes", I think foreign investment is a good thing and is the only way for a capital starved nation to push ahead and provide these jobs.:raw:

Invest in the Bahamas is not for Bahamians its for rich foreigners...
I and other jewellers invested in the Bahamas. We were paving a way for jewelry manufacturing in the Bahamas. I was to the point where I had 6 employees other than family. We sold to most shops down town.. Then out of the blue the tariff act was changed. Jewellery was imported duty free. But we Jewellers had to pay full duty for our tools equipment supplies gem stones gold and silver that was not .999 fine and in bullion form. One jeweller packed up moved to Canada and now exports to the Bahamas. So his Bahamian employees are unemployed and Canadians are employed. Others of us simply shut down... I adapted and the six employees were let go.. Merchants import jewellery at will they can clear it that same day and in the show case for sale in hours. We have to go through a customs broker. Yeah there are industry encouragement act but you have to reply every year. Can any of you get a bank loan not knowing if you will be in business the next year?? No

I was told if jewelers can come up with a specific jewellery item that is not tourist targeted Duty could be applied as protection..

I picked on school rings. I checked with schools to see if I would get their support most said finally someone here will be making school rings..
I took 2 years to train and develope the product. It took a year longer because of the 911 attack and the stone dealer I was working with was in New York... I had to locate another stone dealer that could supply the stones for school rings..
Long story short when I went to the schools we were told they were dealing with a foreign company. We had to push and beg to get get an appointment to show the students our product. Most of the time only to find out the foreign representative already was there and collected their deposits. We were stonewalled left and right.. Schools out right refused us an appointment sight unseen. The kids never knew they had a local choice...
We went to the Minister of Trade and Industry Leslie Miller year before told jewellers to come up with a product that could be clearly identified by its description, and it would be a pulse if it is not tourist targeted, he would raise the duty.. . Well school rings are just that but duty was never raised..
Every year we get students calling and asking for jobs and there is nothing we can do about it cause their money went to the foreigner. Maybe they should ask the foreign school ring manufacture for a job.. But then again the youth will still be leaving..

Many youth go off to college find freedom and never come back.
I am talking about GLBT youth that I have talked to over the years. We are talking about youth that are becoming Drs lawyers and so on not coming back home because of the discrimination they face here..

Light manufacturing (soldering chipsets/clothing)I had an offer from a major jewelry chain to do piece work here in the way of stone setting.. I was told duty would have to be paid even if the product was being sent back out. So a good amount of Bahamians will not have jobs that have gone to Mexico...
