View Full Version : Bahamasair Dedt has now exceeded $300,000,000.00
Prosperity1 03-16-07, - 11:15 AM It has been confirmed by reliable sources within Government, that the National airline of The Bahamas, namely Bahamasair, has noww exceeded the three hundred million dollar mark in debt!
I guess that does not mean anything to this gov't as the prime minister has just recently praised Mr. Bradley Roberts for spending 60 million dollars on fiber optic cable in the mayguana area, where less than 100 people live. He has admitted that it's not economically feasible yet they did it anyway. He went on to brag about how an investor fromThe I-Group was able to use his Blackberry there. I wonder How many people from mayguana will ever use a blackberry there? Lord relieve us of this gov't.
chancellor 03-16-07, - 11:54 AM Even if Bahamasair was to be moved to privatization...I wonder who would buy the airline with that kind of debt.
Question... This debt. Is it part of the National debt or a completely separate independent one.
If I was them I would cut staff immediately and give the finger to the unions that cry about it. I don't know who told them the company had so much money to pay increases to their salary.

I know right? It's like people think the executives sit in the boardroom counting bags and chests full of gold dubloons all day and complement each other on how rich they are, with the serfs are out labouring at the coal mines or somthing.

Boy you hit the nail on the head. And when you giving professional services like me, they assume you must be rolling in the money.
Things have been very tight for me for the last four years. I livin' but sometimes barely.

I am fairly sure that BTC's 60mil fiber optic cable does not only service Mayaguana. But it runs through much of the Bahamas and connects to Haiti and the US.

WOW. that takes a special talent, such a small airline losing so very much money!
on an aside, i think it's brilliant and a long overdue move to lay fiber optics to mayaguana. the high-speed data line that AT&T and batelco co-owns presently deadends in nearby crooked island ... making this part of the country really wired should jumpstart the local economy, drive local IT business development, diversify our island nation.

A couple questions: Over the last 20-30yrs.
1) How much of this debt you think is directly linked to theft, and deliquency?
2) What do you think the debt of Bahamasair would look like if Bahamians were more honest?

Well it would take alot of theft to get that much in debt.
Maybe its just bad management of the company's operations and not being able to compete. In addition, public sector companies aren't as profit driven as private ones (who answer to shareholders). With that being said 300mil debt is just ridiculous.
I'd be nice to see the financial situation of comparably sized national airlines.

the only bahamasair employees that i know personally are honest, so i would be willing to throw a lot of the blame at inefficiency of their operating systems overall ... their phones rarely work, the website is only now beginning to reach its full potential, people at the nassau desks aren't kept informed of flight changes, that intercom system of theirs is hilariously bad and frequently broken.

Bahamasair is one of the few government subsidised companies that don't even act like they are getting better.
