View Full Version : YEAST programme graduates young men.
Alien 04-09-07, - 10:00 AM Mr Lloyd has just with the help of his YEAST programme, graduated a group of young men.
Mr Lloyd’s tireless work has not been heralded, and I doubt that he does it for that anyway. But his programme has gotten people on the right path. I have interviewed many of the young men "post" YEAST; some I can say that some have shown signs of being able to be detracted from the good goal. But, allot of them are better off from the YEAST programme.
This was a progressive breath of fresh air by whoever the originators of YEAST were. We needed to reach out, put the young men in some sort of structure, so that we can not only see how they think, but also inundate them with positive societal norms. These men not only needed a little bit of discipline, but structure and focus. I think we have used the word discipline far too broad and it only co notates the negative. Discipline can be positive, and disciplining yourself into positive things, is a good thing and it should be welcomed over disciplining a young person on how to not do bad things.
As a person who has seen the results first hand. Not only am I pleased at the measures taken, but I am also thankful that someone dared to do something positive for Christ’s sake.
:hammer:
Allot more is needed however. I think the programme has become a bit political, and it has been swamped over by elements that are only in it for self glorification; that does not mean political officials exclusively in terms of government, but like in every organization it has politics and hierarchal quandaries.
All in all. I would just like to congratulate the young men and the team, and hope that this programme continues to have marginal success at the very least.
Cheers!

Yup. It seems that unless its bad news about young people, many folk arent interested. But we certainly need to place more focus on this and other such programs.

And I would say that we need to converge on this as a community.
I think by now, the Bahamas and its people, have to see that there is a situation with our young men. The men are trapped in a ubiquitous malaise of self destructing rhetoric and societal symbolism. The societal reinforcing symbolism about what it means to be a real man is deepening this self destructing cycle of negativity.
I think with YEAST, someone has said you know something; ENOUGH IS ENOUGH AND IT'S TIME FOR A CHANGE!!
:hammer:
It was something that needed to be done, if not said with it in emphasis. I can not express how proud I am, and how pleased I am to not only know it is available to young men, but it actually reaches out to them and works. THAT'S the main thing.
I have seen the young men, and gathered their thoughts and feelings on their own turf post YEAST, it was a challenge I was unwilling to undertake due to the politics, but it was something that after review, was glad to take so I can see for myself exactly what we were doing over here, and so I can be further briefed on the issues facing our young men.
The damage we have let seep into our male culture, can not be reversed in a single stroke. And now that we realize and understand that there is a problem, we have to communicate that it takes time and a joint effort on every interested person willing to see how their part can fit in.
We see now, that the male culture needed to be broken like how the female culture has been broken. This is the sad truth. The reason why American and European women have not crossed the hurdle as much as they would like in terms of true structural and societal power in their respective countries, because their male counterparts are dominant absolutely. The historical underpinning, as much as the racists would like to spin this, is the fact that women on the whole, are more versed in the softer side of the economy; and in this case, the office secretary, administrator etc...and are in a structural and societal position to be exposed to what it is that domesticated individuals need to do, in order to make their surrounding peaceful and progressive. The black woman in particular, due to her structural benefit awarded to her from slavery, has historically in the western hemisphere post slavery, been in a "social" position, of intellectual authority as well as overall womanhood maturity "if you want to call it that" over her male counterpart, because she was allowed to develop at the same time, and with that, awarded domesticated duties which further pushed her culture to a sharpening of her intellectual prowess and maturation as a functioning member of society; albeit she had no choice, as she could not compete anywhere else.
This is what we have been looking at. In a nutshell, she is not only pre-disposed to the softer side of the economy, but she also has a distinct intellectual advantage especially in light of the boom from independence in particular in this country, to what we have now. Couple that with a few dominant males, who not only aid an abet in keeping the more docile female at his side,( white and black men do this) has further pushed the black man into not only societal obscurity, but also into a culture that he responds to; physical and crude forms of behaviour and that reinforces his coping mechanisms. In short, he is doing what he knows how to survive, because getting a break requires him to function at a level, which is at best difficult for him to respond to because no one, from the onset of his development, placed any emphasis on him. The alpha black male in this country, got up by hit or by miss as well as with the grace of the Master coupled with his ability to be inherently more aggressive; in short, this is why we have the saying here might makes right. And this is why, there is another undertone, which says that the alpha male, not only is structurally incompetent on many levels, but he still maintains power because he has just a little more aggression where aggression is needed. The black women of this country see this, and work around him for the most part. With that, they have carried the poison of the male society, back to the homes and further reinforces her female underlings to; “take no sh1t from no man”. And they have a legitimate grievance which causes them to say this, and reinforce this in the home and their social settings. Listen to the R&B music from the black woman. Listen to their cry, but with that, she is still in the best position to turn back and put true diverse assistance to this pressing matter. They, allthought have been trampled on, have been given the power of the understanding of true economic freedom, something in which their counterpart alpha male has, but for the most part, is incapable of understanding what he has and why. Truly a complex situation.
All that being said, we need to look seriously at nurturing our young BAHAMIAN men in this society. We can not afford, another chance slip us by, and talk about integrating foreigners when our men have not been given a chance to blossom fully in this economy and their home. This is why I think we dodged a serious bullet with the referendum. Some women were talking about equal rights, but if they look around, who has more informal un-equal rights than the Bahamian woman. To cut the domestic male out of the picture would not only be catastrophic, but it would be a gross injustice to the legacy of all Bahamian males, considering their contribution to this society and whether it be advertent, or inadvertent, their assistance with making you and all of us what we are today, because it was the first alpha males, who went to the queen and said we can do this.; with that, I say this with full knowledge of the house negro dynamic (that all of us more or less are in the Bahamas), the homosexual and bisexual culture and the reason why our independence was peaceful, but late was because of it. We benefited in the short term but now we are in serious breach of risking the long term, if we do not get right and get right RIGHT now.
This is a wrong we can correct, and it is a wrong, that needs to not only be taken to the dominant male in this country, who has now realized not only that there is something wrong, but also he must see that he assisted in it this problem being deepened. But it also takes those same women who benefited greatly, by being not only at the same starting point virtually, but also being in a structurally better position to literally train how to take advantage of it in order to stem this informal social tide. I like how Minister Griffin pushed for women and domestic abuse rights, but the problem lies in the male population just as much, and you can not, be so one sided in your views, and not see that this is a problem that deserves just as much or even more attention.
I challenge the women of this country, the ones who are doing good and have made it, to put aside what has been done to you by the dominant male; sexual harassment, office embarrassment, sex for favours and social marginalization, and look to not now only help the Bahamian male get his footing in this country, but also help this country be better for all of us. I am talking to the Sherman-Peters, the Melanie Griffins, the Allyson Maynard’s, the Vernice Walkine's the Wendy Craig’s...to push your black man too, and at least put aside your back room egotistical rhetoric, "we women have made it...blah blah blah"get down and dirty, use the education and skills that have been afforded to you, and make a small step to help someone because believe it or not, you were once helped your damn self!!! And I say this, knowing full well the competition level and what has been said almost forthright to the face of our men, and it is self destructing rhetoric because, when you have done that, they not only will retreat to their natural safe place of acceptance, but what they do that is self destructive, will be reinforced and that is bad for all sides
Not only as you "women of social power" are in a better position, being close to your own kids and still having the structural importance of being the person in the home, who is closest in relating to the young, because you are forced to do this with your own kids; I hope, but more importantly this leaves you with the important tool, and catalyst within you of true communication into what needs to be said, that needs to be reached out to the young men. It is not just a plea for assistance; it is basically a cry for help. Help for all of us.
The sad truth is, if you do not help, they will kill and rape you. It is just that simple. They are already killing each other (look at the murder rate increases), and when the dominant street idea has been fermented truly in their minds, they wont be looking at each other to kill anymore, they are coming for you...
Help Lloyd and the rest of the men who saw fit to affect change, set these young men on a path to cultural progress.

I agree and I admit Mr. Jeffrey Lloyd should be commended in a tangible way as he has accepted a challenge many only give lip service to but can't find the time, will or energy to do what is necessary to affect a positive change in our young men who have obviously made some mistakes.
I salute Mr. Jeffrey Lloyd as another brilliant Nation Builder we should be proud of.

I would not say that, but more like left abandoned and which helped to send them down the wrong path, which is wrought with ill fated pit-falls. When you give a flower no attention, it dies. Unless it is a wild flower and no amount of weed killer can kill it, the only way to kill it is to cut it down and salt the root.
We do not have to come to the latter.

My emphasis is primarily on the work and achievement of Mr. Jeffrey Lloyd with respect to the YEAST Programme. It is my hope that as a result these young men will not reek havoc on our society nor become residence of HMS Prison.

Absolutely, but just as we all should reserve the right to commend, we should aslo reserve the right to make aware our feelings and our input on a matter that is of serious concern to us all. I reserve that right, because I have seen an talked to them and dealt with the issues, like Mr. Lloyd has.
As he is to be commended, like I said, there is also alot more to be done and he realizes this. And this is another issue of mine, aside from education. the former I have control over to a marginal degree.
We all need to commend, but we also need to do more ourselves and we can do more absolutely.
