Why does the Bahamas not do more for the environment? I think that it would be easy for the Bahamas to do a few things to improve the environment.

1. Allow and encourage more solar power. This is a huge resource the Bahamas has and it is totally undeveloped. With electricity prices 2 or 3 times more expensive than anywhere else, solar power would be far cheaper than getting the electricty from the BEC. Why don't more people do it? Because the BEC is actively discouraging solar power use.

2. Allow hybrid cars to enter the Bahamas duty free. If this were to occur, Bay street would gain because hybrid cars don't idle like regular cars... pollution would likely be reduced 90% and tourists would actually like to spend time there. Also, I'm sure that Toyota or Honda would chip some money in to make the Bahamas recoup some of this lost money.

3. Fishing for foreigners. We tend to keep fishing for the Bahamians but if we left fishing for the foreigners, we would all get more money. Tourists spend far more money on a per fish basis than local fishermen get out of it. If they were to go on fishing tours our limited resource could be used more effectively to make this country richer.

I agree 100%

There is so many ways we could improve the environment, and our own lives, but we lack the creativity and the will, to do it.

I think it's important for our tourism product as well. People come here to experience a life better than they left, not one that is dirtier. Any investment we make in the environment we'll get back in more tourism. Also, any investment we make in getting rid of potcakes we will more than quadruple our investment, I am sure.

environmental awareness starts at home...but its refreshing to see were turning a new leaf in the Bahamas everyone I talk to Ill throw in a talk about the environment or how the water is looking and how we can do more to protect it...and people are receptive and they listen...being in tune with the environment made my life more purposeful...i wish our govt would agree more because environmental degradation can effects so many aspects in our Bahamian way of life...
