View Full Version : Neville Vision
Neville Vision is at it again. He is busy rowing Bahamians to be Bahamians. I cannot wait for him to get started in next years regatta season. I might even attend a few because I can see them becoming fun Bahamian family cultural festivals. Plus I want to watch Minister Neville in person. I want to witness the making of a Bahamian hero. If Neville Vision succeeds, I hope he will, he will have revolutionized his ministry and changed the Bahamas for the better.
Neville is clearly a man with a mission. He is running into some opposition with Junior Junkanoo. His ideas sound very good to me but he appreciates, I am sure, that people will oppose new ideas. They need some time to adjust. Unfortunately time is not on Minister Neville Vision's side. He has less than five years to do his do. I have no doubt that he will be elected by a landslide next time if he continues on his path. But some of his other party members may cause the PLP to achieve a sound beating in the next election. The Bahamian electorate does not skylark anymore. You perform or you are gone!
Neville wants to do great things with the senior junkanoo too. As long as he keeps Bahamians first he will be okay.
Neville Vision must remember that it is better to "cooperate than to confrontate!" The problem is there are so many little tricky groups that need sorting out. If he get's baseball sorted out he will have assured himself a spot in two places - the baseball hall of fame and his statue in heroes park.
Let's support Neville Vision and Mrs. Wisdom as they do the positive work for the Bahamas.
Isn't Mrs. Wisdom what a minister's wife is supposed to be? What a wonderful woman!
We had and still have so much hope for Neville Wisdom. He was doing so well with the cultural issues. Then he missed the point big time. The Bahamas is for Bahamians first. If you miss that, you miss everything.
No one should have to tell Neville that the Bahamian professional photographers were going to raise hell about the idea of being relegated to Shirley St. Even a foreigner would have known better than that. That flies in the face of all that is Bahamian! That says that for money we will lay down - just quote the right figure. He should know Ken Love better than that!
No one should have to tell Neville that he was going to be in hot water if he called two of the Bahamas' premier professional photographers amateurs. Ken Love has committed his life to photography and has done excellent work over the years. He is recognized outside the Bahamas. Anthony Morley has merged photography and junkanoo and has made Junkanoo an art form. Anyone who has been around the bahamas for even a few years should know better than to call these two gentlemen amateurs.
Neville needs to be big enough now to apologize. Admit he spoke out of turn. Settle the junkanoo photography issue and move on with boosting our culture for us first.
We want to promote the positive aspects of our culture and minimize and eliminate the negative aspects of our culture. I am still convinced that Neville means well and will bounce back from this. I know that Anthony Morley and Ken Love are big enough and Bahamian enough to accept an apology from Neville and continue to help him to succeed. Whether Neville realizes it or not, these two gentlemen and most Bahamians desperately want him to succeed. No, we desperately need him to succeed!
If I knew everything, I would be God!
If I was always right, I would be God!
If I needed no one, I would be God!
I am not God!
Uncle Bob 11-28-02, - 10:39 PM Who does Neville Wisdom think that he is? When you tell me that the Government is going to charge as much as $100 for a seat on the Bleaches, I have a few concerns. If the government is getting into Junkanoo for profit then what happens to the "Average Joe" , who spends countless hours in a shack "for the love of it". Does the government intend to give them a stipend? Is this the direction that we want to take Junkanoo?
Has anyone considered that long term effects of this move?Hey Neville try and motive High School Coachs !! Leave Junkanoo where it is! I gave 18 Years of my life to junkanoo, because I loved it.I rushed when it was not fashionable to do so.I was one of the youngest persons on Bay Street .I begun rushing in 1973 at age 4 Years old.Neville ride to glory on the back of another white horse!!!!!! My grandmother use to say'"The grass is growing and the horses are dieing!!! Go figure!!!
Junkanoo is nothing without the people in the shacks designing, pasting, and music-making. Junkanoo is also nothing without the spectators.
Many people refrain from attending Junkanoo because they do not want to be pushed, shoved, jostled and attacked. What Neville did was to bring some order to chaos. People are now able to pay for a seat and get a seat. That is improvement.
To try to make an issue of $100.00 seats is stretching. Everyone who wants to know knows that you can buy a $10.00 seat. Everyone who wants to know knows that you can still watch Junkanoo free. What Neville attempted to do was expand the audience at Junkanoo so it truly becomes a national festival that all can reasonably attend.
Too many Bahamians want to maintain the status quo. Too many of us hate change, especially if it involves improvement. It is simple to see that the attempt is being made to stretch the celebrations out over a longer period by having several parades. This appears to be a good thing for tourism and for Junkanoo. We should, in my opinion recognize as many of the Junkanoo legends as possible while they are still alive. Naming the parades after them seems to be an appropriate way to do this.
In the meantime I glory in the spirit of the Sting. they bring fun back to Junkanoo instead of listening every year to everyone crying about how the judges cheated for the winner. Junkanooers need to just grow up.
There are a lot of people who applaud what Neville did. Many of those bought tickets and many stayed home quietly and praised him. Neville met chaos and he tried to bring order. He also seems to have a sense of decency which he is trying to convey to the youth and general populace.
Keep on track Neville!
Uncle Bob 01-29-03, - 02:38 PM I'm amused at your comment Ebo. I think that only a blind man could not see that the entire parade was a failure. Here's a little bit of advise ,Junkanoo is all about the Music-Tell Neville the next time include Music in the Float Parade and he may get better results.Second, if you want to improve Junkanoo then at least you should know what it is you are impoving. To put Seating that only allows a view of the Parade in front of you, then after you the parade advance about ten(10) Feet you're left with a wonderful view of the Building that is next door's roof for a $50 -that's not improvement buddy, that's a rip off.Thirdly about Junkanooers growing up.how about you spend six months of time and Four hundred dollars out of your pocket ,then tell me something about Junkanoo. If these guys choose the road of Sting pal,Junkanoo wouldn't be what it is today remember that .Give these guys their respect .
classicromeo22 02-05-03, - 02:34 PM uncle bob is out for blood neville wisdom is a giant and should be applauded for
trying to make a positive change to something that has been a breeding field
for crime
Uncle Bob 02-05-03, - 10:13 PM No I'm not out for blood pal. I just feel that Junkanoo is the one thing in the Bahamas that unites us all. When we 're going to IMPROVE by making money for the Government then we going hear persons in the shacks cry out.I use to spend 4 months a year in the shack.I would not do it for just the love of it, when some else is going to profit from my hard work. By the way crime is in the churchs and every area of our lives .Wake up folks. "The Grass aint growing and the horses are dying!"
I wish we would take the work ethic we display at Junkanoo to our jobs.
Junkanoo does not unite us. It could. I refuse to go to Junkanoo and be pushed and jostled and hustled. I would like to go. Junkanoo needs to be organized and deregulated at the same time. People need to be able to have a seat.
Instead of complaining so much about what Neville is trying to do, you should help him make it better. It was not the smashing success that it could have been. But neither was Independence ot National Insurance. Both of these great historic changes were opposed by many who figured we were not ready.
You talk about the time you spend in the shack as though that gives you some special entitlement. It does not. Junkanoo is nothing without fans. The pricing of the various bleachers allowed everyone to afford a seat. If you did not want to pay, you could still stand for free. Nobody was denied.
Whether you realize it or not, nothing's free! Everything costs something. It only a matter of how you pay. Where possible, it is best for the users to pay. Junkanoo is not water or health care. It does not have to be free for all. Those who do not mind paying for a good seat should not be denied that because you spend 6 months in the shack.
Stop criticizing everything and make 10 suggestions on how to improve Junkanoo. Whenever you knock something down, make sure you have a substitute to replace it with. Let's be postively critical. And it is not about Neville. Neville Wisdom, is only our servant. And in my estimation a good one so far.
Now we need the the Junkanoo report because we must account for the people's resources.
Uncle Bob 03-08-03, - 12:26 AM Junkanoo unites the Doctors, Lawyers ,Bankers with the Carpenters and the unemployed brothers as one. Opps, I forgot you don't spend time in the shacks. My perspectives on the shack life were simply to give you guys the views of the person in the shack. If you think that the guys in the shack doesn't make Junkanoo what it is today then you are a bigger fool that Mr Wisdom.Open you eyes and allow you mind to wonder .In this" give me my share" world want would happen to Junkanoo when the government made a Two Million Dollar profit off the Parades .Then persons who Make a Six (6) Month contribution would then look to want they should get.Name one other thing in the bahamas that person work at for six months for no pay. Not even the church pal! You blind and misguided folks can't see the potential damage that Neville exercise could have inficted on Junkanoo . As for my work ethics pal I am intense and passionate in everything that I do. Like my Daddy would say" Eagles and Chickens in the Barn"
Quantum Leap 03-08-03, - 02:45 AM By the way what is taking Neville Wisdom so long to give the Juankanoo Report?

No. I think it was ground penetrating radar, carbon dating and a paintbrush to exhume this fossil! We should mount it in the 'Hall of Things To Be Archived'
