Joyful, energized political supporters left the PLP rally late last night to an unsettling scene of violence that provoked the police to fire a shot in the air. The rowdy fight left one man with a bloody stab wound in his neck, requiring the assistance of an ambulance, which made its exodus from the packed rally at the carnival site of the Queen Elizabeth Sports Center just as traffic congestion was reaching a peak. Police were only able to provide sketchy details of the altercation, but Assistant Commissioner James Carey did say a suspect had been arrested.
Witnesses say liquor and beer bottles were being thrown in the melee, which took place several hundred yards from the stage where Prime Minister Perry Christie was speaking simultaneously, around 11:30 p.m.
