View Full Version : Gladstone farms; Will it ever reopen?
Alien 04-19-07, - 01:30 AM Seeing that we consume mass amounts of chicken, I find it quite odd that one of the biggest chicken farms in this country, closed down.
I never could have figured out exactly why. I used to work for a place that sold chicken for a living, and they had to order chicken from the states, because they could not get supplied quickly enought from Gladstone. My thing was, why don't they just upgrade, get more space and more chickens?
It sounded so simple to me. Maybe someone can help a brother out.
Also, I wonder if they were doing battery farming?
I thought the owner died then whoever took it over couldnt keep it running .. or something like that?

I have no clue. But if that is the case, then that is one of thee lamest excuses ever. But this is not what I heard, I heard that they just went out of business because they were not making proffit.
islandgyal 04-19-07, - 11:41 AM weren't they pretty significantly impacted by a hurricane in the past few years, though? again, that's the sort of real business development exercise you'd THINK that baic or bahamas development bank would be happy to undertake.

From reliable source, it was not save because snake want the property to built low cost homes. Same thing with the property dispute in boozine town snake company is behind that also.
lynette 04-19-07, - 01:55 PM Well aint no low cost houses there......some expensive ones. Victoria Gardens its now called. And now that the bush clear down we could see how close to the dump the chicken farm was. Makes you a little concerned about contimination.

I don't think the term "low cost" is politically correct these days. It has been replaced with the equally ridiculous - "affordable." lol.

You have to make it sound right. People want to have a sense that what they have is theirs. Do not laugh, because it is serious and it is serious because to some people, this is very important.
They may not have all of the things to their disposal as YOU, but let them have a little something that will bring them pride and pleasure.

I sometimes wonder how you get things out of posting that are not there! I was simply pointing out that "low cost" homes are no longer low cost. When one pays 90K or more for a box of a house "low cost" is the wrong word.
I have noticed the PLP calling them "affordable" housing now. But to me it is just a matter of word play - the houses are not low cost or affordable to many.
trubahamian 04-19-07, - 08:45 PM The price of grain being wa it is and the cost of getting it here,it must have been very expensive for them to compete with imported hens.
Perhaps that made it more attractive to sell the land?
AnarchyIsOrder 04-19-07, - 09:36 PM well,
that's how globalization works. The US exports chicken all over the world and whoever tries to bolster their own industry gets threatened - I'm not saying I know that is the case here, i just know of several other countries where such situations occurred.
When countries attempt to practice protectionism and encourage purchases from their own producers, who, otherwise would never be able to compete with the much larger and much pore powerful multinational US-based corporations, the US government, spearheaded by all the dollar-wielding lobbyists owned by aforementioned corporation threatens the government of such a country with all kinds of sanctions, withdrawal of aid, whatever. Its called "protection of US interests" or as I like to call it - "imperialism".
