Three prison inmates involved in the 2006 prison break when prison officer Dion Bowles was killed were hauled before the courts on Friday and charged with murder.
With their hands and feet shackled, 44-year-old Barry Parcoi, 32-year-old Corey Hepburn and 27-year-old Forrester Bowe hobbled their way into court No. 5 to face Magistrate Carolita Bethel, who was sitting in for Magistrate Marilyn Meers.
All three men, who now reside in the maximum security Unit of Her Majesty's Prison, stood facing the Magistrate as they were indicted. They were charged with unlawfully and intentionally causing the death of Bowles between Monday Jan.16, 2006 and Tuesday Jan. 17, 2006. The trio were also charged with conspiracy to escape lawful custody sometime between Nov. 2005 and Jan. 2006, while under a sentence of imprisonment. They also faced two counts of intentionally and unlawfully causing grievous harm to two men between Jan. 16 and 17, 2006.
The men were not required to enter a plea at the time, yet, Parcoi queried as to why they were not allowed to plead to the lesser charges. The magistrate explained that as the other charges were very serious, a plea to the lesser charges was not needed.
During the court proceeding, Bowe indicated that it was his intention when the matter reconvenes to request the assistance of an attorney.
During the proceedings on Friday the court requested an outline of evidence against the men be presented when the matter resumes.
Just over one year ago, the prison break shocked the nation with its unprecedented violence and subsequent island-wide manhunt for the escaped individuals.
Also killed at the time was inmate Neil Brown, who was convicted of the 2000 murder of Archdeacon William Thompson. Inmates Forrester Bowe, a convicted murderer whose case is now before the Privy Council in London and convicted rapist Barry Parcoi who is serving a life sentence and escaped previously, also attempted to escape, but were shot in the incident and have since been treated and returned to prison
