In years gone by I can only vaguely remember getting a cold that may have lasted about three to four days...now we are being plagued by "stomach viruses" that rampage through our schools, severely affecting our children and ourselves with intense vomiting and other intestinal upsets...is it as a result of our country's 'hospitality' :usa: ? are those we seek to serve serving us up sicknesses? what about those we seek to 'protect' ourselves from? :haiti: the illigal/ legal migrants? are they carriers of these new strains of flu etc? can it have anything to do with the black, blue or white fumes gutting from the mufflers of so many public vehicles that we are forced to inhale as we travel the streets of New Providence? I think the government has lots to research rather than waiting for calamity to strike, then running after the fact with the band aid... :rip:

What about Bahamians :bahamas: going to other countries and picking up the flu and bringing it back? It is very difficult for a country to keep out these new virulent strains of the flu virus. Closing all the borders and not allowing any one in or out is the only solution but that would be preposterous!

Viruses are evolving and mutating at an alarming speed (Darwin was right) and they are doing something that is not new but is becoming more common, they are jumping from one species to another - the swine flu, the bird flu and Green Monkey Virus all mutated quickly and passed easily to humans. (Green Monkey mutated into the AIDS virus.)

All we can do is eat right, keep your immune system working right and don't take an Anti-biotic unless you REALLY need it. We have abused the good old anti-biotic to the point that many virus have adapted to it and it is becoming useless. :fly:

What we really need to worry about is a Pandemic. That is an epidemic that sweeps the world killing millions! It has happened before, it will happen again and there is little or nothing we can do about it. Just to name two of them - In 1347 The Black Death. 25 million people died in five years that is one-third of Europe's people. The Great Spanish Flu of 1918. 40 million died in that one.

Take your vitamins folks! The Biological time bomb is ticking :sparky:

Mainly due to not enforced public health laws, chicken shacks, potters cay, you name it, they are all disease carriers! It's rare to find any food preparers/cooks wearing gloves in the Bahamas, that includes major fast food chains also. Not to mention the highly unsanitory food stores in Nassau.

Has anyone noticed the foggs have increased in the morning?
Or is that smoke from the city dump?

well I wouldnt say everyone or every restaurant is dirty, but places such as most over da hill chicken shacks, potters cay, montagu, even major food store chains, I even stay way from Subway now since something I saw happen when I was there one day.

Im not exactly the follower of my own words, unfortunately I have to eat what I can afford, but I stay far way from anything cold, everything has to be cooked, that helps with diceases/ food poisoning/bacteria etc.

Have you seen the black thing at the food store that you put your goods on to be checked by the cashier, most of the time they are covered by left over juices from chicken or other meats, and they expect you to put your cold food or other dry food etc on that!! Its rediculous.

I think it is a bit of both, natural fgg and smoke from the dump.

I think you both are correct.
Maybe we should start a new thread on this?

Hi just finished this thread it’s amazing there is hope after all. I am shocked that no one did not post and say all this is a result of the GLBT in this world. You know easy scapegoats.

Yes many Bahamians have unsanitary habits. Has any one asked why????

It's really bad now most of the time in Cable Beach. Smoke from the dump and sometimes the smell of burning rubber and other pungent smells, which some people near Arawak Cay (and as far west as the Grove) are saying comes from the cement plant there.

I'm recovering from a bad sinus infection, for which I needed antibiotics and I've heard several other people have had the same thing. I wonder if it's related. I also wonder why there's not a huge outcry from our citizens about this polution which must be hazard to our health!

Tourists at the Cable Beach hotels must surely be complaining - or are they going to say nothing and never come back again to a place they might describe to their friends (prospective visitors to our shores) as "smelly"?!

I live out east but we can still smell the smoke from time to time. I can't imagine how bad it must be for you in the west.

If this smoke is causing breathing problems, and other illnesses, it must be address at once. The Governments job is to protect the citizens, not smoke them out!

Air pollution is a big factor in people getting lung diseases, chronic colds and even allergies - but the viruses themselves all seem to come out of China - where they live in close proximity with their farm animals. A flu that makes a duck or a pig a little bit sick might make a human die - and if the humans in question live around the animals all the time, there's a big chance the virus might jump the species barrier and spread to humans. SARS came out of civet cats that the Chinese were breeding for food and keeping in cages.

The reason we get more flus now has to do with the fact that we can fly from China to the US in a single day - that's how SARS got to Canada, because people flew out on airplanes before the authorities knew what was going on. Of course the Chinese don't have a great record for sharing info on stuff like virus epidemics, and that doesn't help.

Best thing you can do is wash your hands regularly, and remember not to wipe your eyes with your fingers or pick your nose! And personally, I haven't eaten cole slaw from a Bahamian restaurant in years, ever since I got salmonella poisoning two times in a row one summer. And watch out for that fish poisoning too.

Someone should start a petition to have the gov't do something other than burn the solid waste at the dump. This is the 21st century, folks, and we're still back in the 19th...

peace,

~LC~

What about all the stray dogs. Shortly after SARS started in China, they put a great many dogs to death, thinking the dogs were spreading the disease. However, it was not the dogs.

But with all the scavenging and turning over of garbage containers, I would not be surprsed if stray dogs are a contributing factor to some of our viruses.

One of the best ways to keep your immune system strong is to use raw garlic. About 2 or 3 times per week I would take a clove of raw garlic, cut it up very small, put it in my mouth and drink it down with some warm water as you would a couple pills or vitamins. Along with taking a good quality vitamin and mineral capsule daily, this has kept me completely free from the flu or any illnesses for the past nine years!

Garlic is very good for the immune system. I use tons of it in my cooking but to eat a clove raw! Two or three times a week? You have a stronger stomach than mine!

Here is a little story. I DO NOT recommend you try this. I just want to show you how medicine's ideas change. My Grandfather, in his youth suffered from cold after cold, flu after flu. In his day there were major epidemics of flu that killed thousands. When he was fourteen, his doctor recommended he take up smoking as a way to kill the cold and flu germs!!!!!!! :what: He never had another cold (or so he said) and died when he was ninety-one. (Imagine how long he might have lasted if he did not smoke!)

How the world's ideas change. No Doctor in his right mind would do such a thing these days - and no patient, in their right mind, would follow such advice! But in those day, things were different.
