He had to be fired by Mr. Ingraham for corruption, and Mr. Ingraham did not just put up with Mr. Symonette’s conduct as chairman of the Airport Authority. [Mr. Ingraham] also moved him as Minister of Tourism because of his failed policy of ‘Hip To Hop’ (a tourism ad campaign launched during Mr. Symonette’s tenure as Tourism Minister).
"So it’s not that The Bahamas is not ready for a white prime minister; it just happens that The Bahamas is not ready for that particular white Prime Minister, Mr. Brent Symonette."
Mr. Bannister also addressed the matter of Mr. Symonette’s firing.
"Mr. Ingraham fired Mr. Symonette because there was a conflict of interests," he said. "There’s a difference between an impropriety and a conflict of interests."
Will someone please explain th edifference between conflic aof interest and impropriety? what's the difference?

Conflict of interest is what Brent did.
Impropriety is what Shane did.
One got fired, the other not. Both should have been.
Both are running
Conflict of interest has to do with personal gain, usually money
Impropriety is usually a moral slip up.

BahamaWave 04-24-07, - 11:24 AM "Conflict of interest:
A conflict of interest is a situation in which someone in a position of trust, such as a lawyer, a politician, executive or director of a corporation or a medical research scientist or physician, has competing professional or personal interests. Such competing interests can make it difficult to fulfill his or her duties impartially. Even if there is no evidence of improper actions, a conflict of interest can create an appearance of impropriety that can undermine confidence in the ability of that person to use his/her position with proper ethics. A conflict of interest can exist even if no unethical or improper act results from it. This is seen as a "conflict of roles" where the interest of ones self differs from that of others. The conflict can be mitigated by third party verification or third party evaluation noted below - - but it still exists."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conflict_of_interest
"Impropriety:
1. the quality or condition of being improper; incorrectness.
2. inappropriateness; unsuitableness.
3. unseemliness; indecorousness.
4. an erroneous or unsuitable expression, act, etc.
5. an improper use of a word or phrase."

:realmad: There's 9 people in the house! Auntie ain't reading what Uncle posted beforehand!
SlipGoes 04-24-07, - 11:28 AM Hey thanks. Question for you, is Shane still a Cabinet Minister? Is this Kuntry ready to have a Deputy Prime Minister who has negative baggage such as being branded and confirmed as commiting acts fo "conflict of interest"? especially in the case where his national chairman confirms that a conflict of interest did take place.
How will having such a person so close to the bossom of the Bahamas political and economic future affect our image? How will this be written in our history books? Should we not spare our children from this betwix and between environment? I for one will not condone writing such an act in our history books, and with history we must write everything.

maybe we read different quotes from Mr. Bannister. he didn't say that Brent committed an act of impropriety. YOU posted that he said that Brent was fired because of an apparent conflict of interest.
are you just reading/seeing what you want to because it furthers your cause?

It seems the PLP have forgotten Shane's mess-up, so has the FNM forgotten Brent's - which by the way did not make the international news!

Thanks for the correction. I was a misprint. I have made the correction to the posting. Now if you could so kindly answer the intelligent questions you glossed over I would be thankful for that.

Dick Cheney...Halliburton.... The biggest conflict of interest ever!
The country will survive both Shane or Brent.

Should the Bahamas have a deputy prime minister who accepts money for favors and then deny it and say the man should be made to leave the country cause he lie on her...and then it is proven not a lie and she aint apologize or say nothing else. She has been proven dishonest and sought to retaliate...very Christian of her.
Should we have a deputy who refuses to provide the police force with the tools and equipment it needs to do its work and has prayer meetings instead in response to rising crime.
Someone who interferes with police matters and tells them who to arrest or not arrest. For example when the little boy was reported missing from his dads car, the police suspected the father right away and wanted to question him. The deputy get in the way and say you cant see this family grieving follow some other leads. She interfered and guess what...the Daddy was guilty and lead the police to the body when his conscience start kicking him.
Should we have a deputy who insists that her police son, who was not qualified, be promoted...opening the floodgates for others who were not qualified to be promoted also. They said what was good for the goose was good for the gander...me and him in the same boat if he going up I going up too.

firstly, a conflict of interest is virtually inevitable. as you can see from present local governments, past local governments....and the current global government (in particular, that of our good friends to the West). in my opinion, what is done about said conflicts.....is what truly matters. Brent was handled before. you don't think he remembers that? i do believe that he (Brent) will be on his p's & q's to avoid even the appearance of a conflict of interest. with that being said, i don't think we would have any additional harm done to our global 'image' than we would have if we allowed Mr. Gibson back in office.
it will be written in our books the exact same way all other 'scandals' were written. and sadly enough, this is on the bottom of the scandal totem pole. so much so, some people have forgotten about it.
we should spare children from this 'betwix & between' environment. but believe it or not, that starts within the home. past governments have had their moments....and this current goverment has had its moments. so if you think you can go to another country and not experience the same environment.....lol.....then pack your bags for the moon, hun.
SlipGoes 04-24-07, - 12:03 PM Why you beating on me for Desmond Bannister's words? It is Desmond the Chairman of the FNM who labels his Deputy Leader as having commited acts of "conflict of interest" while being responsible for protecting the public good. In regard to the circumstances at hand, you need to be asking Desmond to retract his comments les we be obliged to accept the potential of a CONFLICT OF INTEREST taking over the FNM when Hubert gets sick again or in 18 months when Hubert gets tired of being Leader of the Opposition in the Senate.
There is bound to be a fight for FNM leader come May 3 when yall trying to find a leader to represent your Party in the House. Maybe you could ask Alvin Smith or Tennyson Wells to serve since Hubert will be in the Senate.
