After the granddaughter of a former Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) Member of Parliament was injured in a dispute with family members over her allegiance to the Free National Movement (FNM), a community activist is calling for "true democracy".

Local psychiatrist Dr. David Allen said "political tribalism" was to blame for families being torn apart during this heated political season and that people are aligning themselves with one party or another from a "sense of survival".

This comes after 24-year-old Amanda Edgecombe sprained her ankle Saturday afternoon when a dispute with her father, the son of former Fox Hill MP Frank Edgecombe, tuned ugly because her father claimed she was "disrespecting her family" by wearing FNM T-shirts and having FNM flags on her car.

"I fell off the porch as we were arguing and twisted my ankle and my father threw beer on me," Ms. Edgecombe told The Nassau Guardian, with obvious disbelief in her voice. She said she then rose up off the floor, shouted "FNM or nothing!" to her father and drove out the yard, with her family members throwing rocks at her car ....

.... Said Ms. Edgecombe: "The funny thing is I'm not speaking with [my family] anymore over elections and after election Hubert Ingraham and Perry Christie will be the best of friends [and] those MPs and senators will have businesses together."

that's sad. simply because family is family. nothing is supposed to be stronger than blood. i don't care if that was a BDM supporter throwing beer on his PLP-supporting daughter, it's wrong.

And regarding the argument itself, just visit any neighborhood bar, basketball court, shopping plaza around town and you will witness the same fervor amongst opposing party faithfuls. To call this a PLP issue is ridiculous!
