The Government of the United States of America, in collaboration with the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), will host the Conference on the Caribbean – a 20/20 Vision which will be attended by all 15 CARICOM Heads of State/Government. The Conference is scheduled to be held 19 to 21 June 2007 in Washington DC.
The Conference will provide a forum for interaction between the Governments of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the Government of the United States of America. It will be the first time the policy makers, the international financial institutions, academic community, private sector and people of the Caribbean and the United States will interface in one Conference, to examine the growth and development opportunities for the Caribbean Community. The Conference further, will aim to strengthen the relationship of the different Caribbean Diaspora communities in the United States as well as examining rewarding mechanisms for harnessing their skills in support of the Region’s development. The cultural component of the Conference will showcase and art and music of the region. A gala concert will be held under the theme “An Evening of with the Caribbean” will highlight music, dance and word by artists from across the region. A copy of the schedule of events will be forwarded once finalized by the CARICOM Caucus in Washington.
With respect to the Diaspora, a number of Town Hall meetings have been held to include nationals of the Member countries of CARICOM who reside in the United States, [Washington, New York, Hartford, Philadelphia, Miami, Boston, (Houston and Atlanta 27 and 28 April), Los Angeles and Chicago (4 and 11 May, 2007 respectively)]. The purpose of the Town Hall meetings is to inform the Diaspora of matters related to the Conference and of developments in the CARICOM and opportunities opened through the creation of the Caribbean Single Market. The outcome of the Town Hall meetings will feed into the Diaspora Dialogue which will form an important part of the Conference. The Working Group on the Diaspora Dialogue has also circulated a proposed schedule of meetings to be held in the capitals of selected states where there are large Caribbean populations. As indicated a Town Hall meeting in Los Angeles is scheduled for Friday 4 May, 2007, at the 6:00p.m. at the Nate Holden Theatre, 4718 West Washington Boulevard, Los Angeles, California 90016 . It is the expectation that Bahamian nationals in the area and other potentially interested persons and organizations would be invited to participate in the Town Hall meetings.
