back ground info: Beginning from last year i represented my school (G.H.S) in many science based competitions and even won first place and the right to represent the country at the regional science expo in Jamaica. I recieved this honor in the presence of Minister Alfred Sear and M.P. Veronica Owens and many represenatives from U.N.E.S.C.O but yet my accomplishment was not announced to the school even though my trophy was quickly grasped :)

point: how can the school expect to promote academic excellence when events such as these are kept under raps? Every day it seems that only persons that excell on the track deserve special mention but is this what we should be putting out there for up and coming students? i would like to think that bahamians can succeed in other areas than sports, what are your thoughts if any? :)

Hi Koolbonze, I think it is quite wrong and disgusting for such an accomplishment on your part to go unnoticed like that. The school and the Minister should give you and your Science teacher full public commendation for such an achievement. I can't see any excuse for not doing so!

But I would like to encourage you to never give up, keep on keeping on and one day (soon, I hope) you will receive your just rewards. (One of my greatest belief is that a person who continually does good and right things WILL BE REWARDED, NO MATTER WHAT!!!). You could well become a world-class scientist and inventor! I recall the time the late Sir Winston Churchill was asked to give a speech to university graduates. After a number of speakers had given their long addresses, Sir Winston got up and said in his booming voice, NEVER GIVE UP! He repeated that sentence three times and sat down. That was the extent of his great speech! So Please, NEVER GIVE UP and be encouraged, and you will be fully rewarded by The Master and respected by human beings.

yep, sports careers do not last long, while you are still there making the big bucks in your career, or retired as you already made a cool easy bil. the people that did so well in sports and were so praised by the school while they forgot about your accomplishment (which was actually more important), will be working at McDonalds or Bamboo shack, though there isnt anything wrong with that, it is still a job! :-)

k.o.o.l.b.o.n.z.e, congratulations on your award. We on these threads recognize your accomplishments and offer you our applause.

Your school should be announcing it from the roof tops! The fact that many schools worship brawn over brains is just a fact of life. However, you will have the last laugh when you get a good steady job - that does not involve bouncing an air fill bag of leather around a court.

Can I get any "amens" from anyone? At least to say well done to k.o.o.l.b.o.n.z.e?

A writer made the point that when Queen's honours are handed out only politicians, religous leaders, etc. get recognised as opposed to a country like Barbados where mathematicians, engineers etc. are praised and recognised. our leaders are mostly people who trained in social sciences or humanities and perhaps do not understand the importance of science. They do not get it..we need to elect peole who do get it next time.

I cry shame that your accomplishments were not publicized. Are there any photos of the ceremony? Would love to see some. :bahamas:

crying shame actualy, it makes you wonder what in the heck are you doing it for!
but continue to excel, and continue to work at being better, the reward will come, even if it doenst come right away!

have satisfaction with yourself, and continue to strive for better goals..and yadda yadda yadda....
the same old thing you always hear, but it is the truth, many of your accomplishments will go unoticed...many of your acheivements will be a footnote on someone elses footnote.....
being shunned by your peers or the people you are trying to impress, always stings...but it will happen more times than not...

but, do it anyways cause you like it and cause it actualy helps...
the more and more you come to realize this, the more and more the recognition you will not want or crave....
and then you find pleasures in the simple things....

but a heads up wont hurt sometimes eh??
:sparky:

unfortunately the same things you and i need to go through to toughen up...are the same things that hurt and discourage us the most...but if you break, then you are really soft, and if you dont then you are made of the tuff stuff.....

just remember it all prepares you for better and bigger stuff....
