A few weeks ago I thought I heard that our government had called in experts to try and solve the Nassau dump problem. Has anyone heard anything since?

I heard that Brazil (I think it was Brazil) is using the gases emitted from their public dumps for some of their basic energy. Why don't we do something like that here?

It's terrible again today (worse tonight) in the Cable Beach area where we live (right near the hotels)!

Why is nothing being said about this problem?!

Its raining, FINALLY, so hopefully this will put an end to alot of the problem, for now.

Yes, it's raining too here in Cable Beach! Hopefully, this should help.

I felt quite sick all day and someone else who's in the "dump smoke area" told me her little girl complained about discomfort in her chest and that she didn't feel well enough to go to school.

Of course, when the wind changes, those who haven't already been affected by the smoke, may well find that it is now coming their way.

someone should be held responsible, and should loose their job, jailed, and or sued!

I did say it would rain on wednesday :-) Thanks to weather.com! they are pretty good.

Sorry to hear this it must be bad some times when I drive by the dump I know I don't like it.

What do you suggest be done with the garbage and who will pay to get it done??

I have my thoughts but it would be interesting to hear others on the subject on garbage pollution

Can't blame anyone we all make the garbage that goes to the dump.

Thanks for your concern Vicky. Thank goodness the rain seems to have driven the smoke away from Cable Beach! This is only a temporary "fix" though and I wonder which other parts of New Providence might unfortunately be suffering from the public dump smoke now.

You are so right - we all make the garbage that goes to the dump! I guess the government will fork out more money to foreign consultants! Hope it helps. Unfortunately, our people also dump garbage on our roads, beaches and around our parks, so what hope do we have for an environmentally conscious waste disposal site?

I live in the Cable Beach area and have been suffering with the dump smoke practically everyday for months. I am sure the Prime Minister is smelling it too since he also lives in Cable Beach.

Something has to be done quickly. My wife has developed a chronic cough from staying at home being a housewife and my neighbor's mother who suffered from asthma, died a couple of months ago from complications which could have easily been caused by the horrible amount of smoke that hits the area at different times of the day everyday.

Why does this Government take so long to take action? I wonder how many tourists staying at a Cable Beach Hotel have gone back home with the impression that this island is highly poluted and harmful to your health. How many Cable Beach residents like my wife are suddenly developing respiratory diseases.

I was hoping that the problem would go away quickly since it is affecting the health of the Prime Minister and he would not allow such a thing, but apparently it is also taking his government too long to make up their minds on what to do.

I understand we need to have the dump. What I don't understand is why do we have this problem now. I have lived in Cable Beach for nearly 20 years and only recently has this smoke been so intense in the area. What has changed? Whatever changed has to return to how it was before if Cable Beach is to remain a livable place.

you could sue the gov for something like this in first world countries, as it is obviously a serious health issue.

I feel that Nassau is too small in size to have a dump site located on it. I think that it is time to relocate the site to another island that has the space for it (possibly Andros).

There is no better way to decrease property value than to have a dump next door.

Unfortunately, I don't think that's the solution. We'd only be moving the problem to another location.

there are a lot of trash/refuse that can be recyled and made good. For instance, all the food products that are dumped out on a daily basis could be put to compost and that would eventually be used to enrich the soil. Glass, plastics, paper, aluminum, stell, old batteries, old cell phones, and lots of other things people get rid of could be recycled.
Yes, a lot of countries are able to use this trash as another form of energy. To be honest, there are many single families that get the know how and use it to cut the cost of their ultility spending.
There could be collection centers for the latter set up and a company could contract to send it to a recycling plant. The food and human waste products could be sent to the other islands in order to enrich the soil and be used to grow the much needed agricultural products.
I have some information that I will gather together and post for all to read.

As far as the government doing something about the people that are guilty of doing this, you can't leave everything up to them. Policing the areas where you see a lot of illegal dumping and bringing it to the authorities knowlege is helpful but how fast are they going to be able to act on it? This needs to be a group effort in each community. Need to band together have a 'Clean up day' and gather it all up. To be honest, this would be a very lucrative business venture for someone!!!

I know the list is a little long but there is definately some good reading on all of this matter. And (my famous line) 'Bottom Line', it takes each one of us to be responsible and it is true that Nassau is not big enough to have a large landfill with the population that it has and all the cars on the island. That is another thing, emission of exhaust from cars along with all the other burnings going on. There are emission inspections on all cars aren't there? If not, that is another thing that would definately help ease the pollution.

Here is a list of websites that will be helpful to the concern at hand.
