Say there was a HUGE economic development plan going on in Little Ragged Island or Crooked Island:
1. You would be interviewed and hired BEFORE you left NP.
2. You would be required to train for 1 yr to 18 months overseas or in Nassau/Freeport before the project opened. (Employer paid tuition and books, partial living expenses, no paycheck during training)
3. You would be required to sign a 3-5 year work contract.
4. Health insurance (for employee and immediate family) at reasonable cost.
5. Continued education opportunities.
6. Opportunities for low interest loan to buy a home on the island after 18 months of employment.
7. Employees "Village" and the creation of a new town for all resident including, cinema, grocery store, fast food, banks, laundry, parks, etc
8. New public elementary school (with pre-school option)
9. Jr high and High school
10. Clinic and Police station
11. Pay rates at around $1,100 per month. (Depending on education and job position.
Folks all over the Bahamas would be encouraged to open up shops and small business on the island. This would be a new city, so any business you could think of would probably fly.
The proposed plan would require about 1000 workers not including family members, etc (probably relocating about 4500 people). You would have to pay for your own relocation.
Would you move out of Nassau for this if someone started advertising?
I am just curious to see how dedicated people are to staying in Nassau.....

yeah pretty bad. If all people are use to is these crappy stores then they might not notice how bad they really are though.

Like a "really bad country Walmart" bad or a "you lucky if we have toothpaste, soap and bread" bad?

like they always run out, always out of date, generators always breaking down, spray down everything with insecticide, and the back of the stores have not seen an Environmental Health employee in years.

Dont know, im generalizing ofcourse, most of the culprits being City Market stores, but Super Value isnt out of the loop either, especially in the rear of the store and spraying. The Solomons Store is one of the cleanest though, I didnt notice any grime or strange stenches in the back of their store, they also seem to have a good supply.

depends on what it is you're looking for (@ good supply).

things are ridiculously expensive over here. the one thing i'd probably be most weary of when considering relocation, is the high prices @ the grocery stores.

Well besides the usual bad yogurt, milk, weasels in dry food, samenala infested cashier counters, occasional food poisoning, lack of availability and selection, worst case scenerio is I found a piece of metal wool (from those pot scrubbers) in my cooked food once .. needless to say I never went back!

Iwould move because I love the family islands. But do please note....... everything is expensive out there and I mean expensive. Food, cooking gas , car gas, clothing, water. you name it it is very expensive. I think Eleuthera and Inagua were some of the cheapest one time and the last time I was there was about 8 -10 years ago

Hmmm... so we would be looking at a thre times weekly shipment of goods from China and gasoline in order to make a go of it?

... and I think its is disgusting what you guys in Nassau have to deal with in the supermarkets.

Hmm..

One of the main reason large scale insdustrial development won't locate from the US or China to the Bahamas is the high cost of labour.

Now I am not talking paying anyone pauper's wages, but why would any company pay a Bahamian worker $50k for a manufacturing job with benefits when they pay the same in the US?

If we could lower the cost of lving in the Bahamas by increasing manufactured goods and importing cheaper goods, maybe things would be more attractive.
