View Full Version : Should the PM's car speed?
Bahamas Writer 02-28-04, - 08:20 PM I think we’re tired of being scared out of our wits when the PM’s car tears along with police escorts yelling “get out of the way” and sirens shrieking. Don’t you think the PM should show more decorum? I don’t remember Hubert Ingraham doing this. He was more humble.
This happened recently along the Cable Beach strip right after the police were out in full force booking poor tired Bahamians heading home after a hard day’s work and perhaps going only a few miles per hour over the speed limit!
k.o.o.l.b.o.n.z.e 02-28-04, - 09:31 PM no, i do not think that the prime minister or any politician for that matter should be tearing through the streets for no reason other than to avoid traffic (also seen with police that turn on sirens but yet cruise at 35 m.p.h) it is instances like this that make me want to put off taking my driving test

Depends on the situation
Maybe he has to catch a flight out allot of times? He can't be rushing to get home :gi:
Maybe there are more security issues with this prime minister than there was with the former?
When it all boils down, Nassau roads are too small and congested for bikes to be moving quickly. I sometimes wonder how the police and medics go a day without a collision?
Bahamas Writer 02-28-04, - 10:32 PM This happens a lot on the Cable Beach Strip, which is not at all congested as it has a dual carriageway on both sides. When this last incident happened, it seemed as though the car went speeding to his house to pick the PM up and then sped eastwards.
And as a footnote – someone told me that while the police were pulling motorists over, an SUV went speeding by and they didn’t pull THAT person over, whoever they were!
One would think that the PM would set the right example!
Speeding is against the law, and it is dangerous. He should instruct his drivers never to break the speed limits, even if he is late! We can't speed when we are late! Besides, whoever heard of a Bahamian arriving on time anyhow?

Ok CG, I would think he should not really be speeding every time but don't you think that maybe sometimes an urgent situation could arise which could warrant haste on his part? Maybe he should have a siren in his car for such a time. These are serious times, what with the terrorists and others hell-bent on attacking the U. S., Christians and Jews. He could possibly help to avert a dangerous incident.

Of course!
His position may require that from time to time he has some urgent business. But not every trip! Not every day!
We allow and equipt, fire-engines, ambulances, police cars etc. with sirens so that they can get to their emergencies. I would have no objection to your suggestion that the PM's car be fitted with such a device.

that was probably me! :-)))) 70 is speeding, 40 is normal, 25 is rediculous!

I agree. they need sirens though, lights mean nothing without a siren, or do they?? I see ambulances going along with lights only andI move off the road, but everyone else goes on normally, so whats the deal?

I often see the same thing. I wonder if the ambulance drive knows he has his lights on - perhaps he forgot to turn them off from a previous job! However, I always give them the benefit of the doubt and get out of the way. There may be some other reason for the lights to be on - maybe the siren is broken!
GavinK 03-16-04, - 10:24 PM well lets hope he can live with himself after he knocks someone down.
Bahamas Writer 03-21-04, - 06:51 PM The other evening I noticed the PM's car driving through Cable Beach well within the speed limit, with only flashing lights. And the car behind him (probably security) only had flashing lights. No sirens. Much more acceptable (perhaps someone read this thread!).
However, in this day and age with all the violence and crazy people in the world, it's probably best for those in prominent positions not to draw attention to themselves (as sad as that is).
