So, in what "ghetto" area do you live? I smelled smoke last night, and a bit this morning,

actually its 3 houses that are ghetto houses, in a good area, they are shanty houses and run down, potcakes running around loose, etc. See in the ghettos they burn bush as they dont care about anything, those that do it.
Its Burning Again Around Here, Cant Go Outside Without Eyes Burning From The Smoke, Fox Hill/eastern Road Corner, What Is Wrong With Those People Around There!! And Why Cant The Police Do Anything About It. Also Smells More Like Burning Rubber Now, Windows Closed, It Doesnt Help.
I Guess That Is What Happens When You Live Next To A Ghetto (fox Hill), They Are Always Burning Something Day & Night, Without Care For Anyone Else.
k.o.o.l.b.o.n.z.e 05-31-04, - 02:06 AM at least your house wasnt in danger of burning down because your neighbours decided to use the very out-dated method of land clearing known as 'slash and burn'. what i find funny is the fact that burning trash is supposed to be illegal now but the nieghbour doing it was in fact a police officer.
Bahamas Writer 06-05-04, - 08:24 PM There's a front page article in the Nassau Guardian today about how residents have been suffering in the South Westridge area for the last two weeks from people burning bush in the area.

What do you expect for the government to do? Make the police run around arresting bush-burners instead of tyring to deal with more serious crimes? This is close to complaining about neighbors making love in a loud manner all night.
I understand your frustration and feeling of discomfort, I often smell smoke in my yard too. It is never because of my neighbours, usually a car seriously smoking or something like that. One neighbour tried burning something but Me and the other neighbours went to him and explained the situation, suggested different solutions. That way we solved the problem peacefully and without government intervention. Try that, believe me, frendliness works.
Hi, No, I dont expect them to stop fighting the other crime also, but burning fires, bush, garbage is also against the law, so I only expect the same enforcement as any other law.
In the latest cases, I have resulted with chest pains, from the extreme strong smoke; and from the smell, it may be more than just bush.
I commend the police on their crack down of other crimes lately, I only ask them, or the fire dept, who is actually the arresting officers in cases as this, to look out for this problem as it is becoming even more wide spread than ever now.
I am actually going to take this up with our local representative to see if there is something they me be able to do to help. I am also concerned that more people do not complain, as AC is not an answer to the problem.
I have actually complained in person to the Fire Dept, and the Police (when the Fire Dept Officers were not at their station) about this numerous times this year, and in many cases, I simply called the Fire Dept to report a bush fire, which is well within the law, and they responded to put the fire out, but those times the bush fire was in site, this latest development cannot be located, without going house to house so it is out of my hands now. Now I must just suffer with chest pains, and burning eyes.
Don't worry though, I do see the police in action, around my area (Eastern Rd), and I commend them on what they are doing to fight crime, here and all over nassau, they are underpaid and not properly equipped, and are doing a good job fighting crime non the less. I do wish the time will come when our government, whichever one is in office, be it FNM or PLP, OR any of the others, will give more to the police to use, and less to non vital equipment such as GSM or the like.
My only police related issues are with Road Traffic, not in relation to the officers fighting crime, and that department needs to be seriously ravamped.

I hear you about the vehicle smoke thing, I live on the eastern rd, just 10 feet from the road, and the 7-9am traffic is a killer.
Thats something else that needs to be dealt with, but I guess now with all the older Imported Japanese Diesel vehicles almost every car lot is selling, its probably going to be hard for us to fix that problem.
I just look forward to fresh air once again :-) The outislands are looking better every day..

Here in Canada, we have hundreds of thousands of vehicles that run on PROPANE. Most of our taxis, police cars, post office trucks, UPS, FedEx, and many private cars use this clean buring motor fuel. About one half of all the gas stations in Canada sell Propane motor fuel, along with the regular gasoline and diesel. Propane vehicles here in Canada are sold without a sales tax, either new or used ones.
Sooner or later, all of these vehicles come up for re-sale, so why not have some exported to your country? I know that propane is readilly available in Nassau, for cooking and other uses, so why not as a motor fuel? All it would take is a change of the filler hose ends to accomodate the larger tank fittings on the cars and light trucks.
The Government of the Bahamas could encourage the use of propane vehicles by dropping the import tax on THIS class of vehicle. This would do two things.........make Propane vehicles more attractive to buyers, especially those from Canada where the wholesale prices are lower than the USA, and greatly reduce the air pollution that all of your are complaining about.
The cars are made, at the factory, to run on Propane, and you can order a brand new Ford, GM, Chrysler, or Honda, with a propane engine. The engines last a very long time, as the Propane does not contaminate the oil like a gas engine does. My last Ford van, with a 351 V8 engine, I used to change the oil at 20 ,000 mile intervals, and the spark plugs at 100,000 miles. I put 870,000 miles on that 1991 Ford E350, and then sold it, and as far as I know it is still running, with probably over a million miles on it now.
Propane is a clean and green motor fuel, that could dramatically change the air quality in the Bahamas.

The infrastructure to support propane vehicles would have to be put in place first. So I wonder who would have the foresight and financial backing to implement this ecofriendly solution.
Y'all know that Bahamians just like to jump in their car and drive. The environment is not this society's first priority.
