Has anyone noticed how bad the road surfaces all over Nassau are getting? Even in Cable Beach, which has had good roads for as long as I can remember, the roads are starting to get "bumpy"!

Rory 03-21-04, - 07:39 PM It is because they were never created properly in the first place, plus all roads worldwide need frequent repair, which is something the Bahamas government has never been able to do with any public areas, including sides of roads etc, notice their are no public areas with actuall grass, its just weeds, and they pay their lanscape staff to mow weeds! its a waste of money. Cable Beach is a rare one, and probably paid for by the Hotels anyway, plus of you go 20 feet across the road, its just like the rest of nassau! Yes BW, I quite agree with you and I believe all road users would also agree that our Nassau roads are in a terrible state! For the life of me, I just can't figure out why the government just willfully would not resurface all the bad roads in New Providence! Sometimes I wonder if some of them are majority shareholders in major local auto companies -- that way the more cars these bad roads break up and destroy, the more money they (the shareholders) would make! Long ago the PLP government used to repair and resurface most of the roads just prior to a general election, but that stopped smetime around 1985. I can recall that around that time I wanted to buy a brand new car, but I wanted to wait until most of the roads were repaired. I waited for 4 years, all to no avail, and finally bought a new car in 1989. And from 1985 until now, very few major road repairs or resurfacing have been done to Nassau roads! (Seems that when the FNM was in power they devoted most of the road works to repairing Family Island roads). I hope the minister responsible realises that it is high time that our Nassau roads be resurfaced and repaired! Great Demos Bahamas Writer 03-25-04, - 09:58 PM It would also help if Public Works didn't dig holes in the roads, then leave them unmarked for unsuspecting motorists to bust a tyre rim on! Example - on West Bay Street near Casuarinas Hotel, there's a large square hole that's been dug out for some kind of utility. If you spot it in time and are clever, you can drive over it with the hole in the centre of your vehicle, but if you don't notice it until it's too late it can cause some very serious damage - perhaps even an accident. Also, because I don't have a large SUV with big tyres, I drive my small Nissan carefully along Nassau's roads these days! This means I don't break the speed limits! That annoys many drivers behind me, who either have large SUVs or trucks - or just don't care if their vehicles get damaged! They bear down on me with their front bumper almost touching my back trunk. We more careful drivers are just trying to avoid damage to our vehicles or serious accidents because of our bad road surfaces! Bahamas Writer, I just have to say something here, I can identify with what you are saying so much, its almost like I wrote this post. Yes, we must learn to straddle those large holes and pray your vehicle is wide enough. Also, be extremely careful after a heavy rain. Usually after a heavy rain, I don't drive on any unfamiliar streets, 'cause the holes are covered up with water and you can't see them. Some years ago through the street at the Grants Town Post office after a heavy rain I went down into a hole there and got my car damaged to the tune of $500 to change some CV joints! And I was driving fairly slow! I usually drive fairly slow most of the times, especially in crowded over the hill streets, where someone (especially a child) is likely to suddenly dash across your path at anytime. In the case of drivers always trying to overtake you because of slow driving, many times I would just pull over and let thm pass. One thing for sure, to be a careful driver on New Providence streets these days you really have to give up your rights sometimes. Great Demos Right you are! And you get yelled at too! Have you ever gone at the proper speed limit in a school zone? There is a place when some serious yelling and horn blowing can happen! There is a place when some serious yelling and horn blowing can happen! Yes CG, you are right! I think many of our drivers need an attitude adjustment. I recall years ago a well known psychologist said you can tell everything about a person's personality by the way he or she drives. If they have no consideration for other drivers, if they are short-tempered, it will all come out in they way they drive. Thank God, I don't drive too much these days. I know a number of the older experienced drivers say they feel a bit afraid driving now. As long as they are healthy, I think they should keep in practice. I believe that if I were to stop driving for a year or so, the roads would then seem so strange with all the new drivers doing all sorts of crazy things, I probably would find it extremely hard to drive! I posted that tinted windows on cars can hide the identities of criminals and it has been announced that police will be enforcing (or reintroducing) the law against tinted car windows! Is all this a coincidence - or do we have BahamasIssues.com to thank? :) Delroy 04-11-04, - 09:55 PM I have seen some things also BW. I say a big thank you goes out to all members like yourself who continue to address these issues everyday  CG 04-11-04, - 11:37 PM Has anyone noticed? If you ask me every driver should not license or pay inspection for their cars unless road work officials repair these bad forsaken roads immediately. I mean you payin over $120 for inspections, $50 for DLs and not one decent road on this island...I mean where is the money going??? If you dont have the money and might choose to place road tolls at Sports Centre entrances, Independence, East/West, Charles Saunders and Milo Butler Highways then do it! This shouldnt be, come on nah! Rory 04-12-04, - 11:57 AM and it would be nice to have some lines also to indicate lanes, helps at night time considerably, on the poorly lit nassau roads. |
