i saw a clip of this...you couldn't make out clear images...
we have to make sure that we stem the rise in violence against women by challenging the fundamentalist principles that promote that behaviour...

I don't think violence against women has anything to do with fundamentalism or religion in any shape, form or fashion. I saw this video on CNN and I found it on a website earlier this week. I've seen some things in life and none of it compares - and I've seen family members killed in front of me - but this video was far far more disturbing. I can't see how any man, fundamentalist or not, saw any honor in this. If the choice came down to doing this to an innocent 17 year old girl and going to hell - I would sadly spend eternity suffering.

It is a despicable practice, but it prevails throughout Africa, the Middle East and the Far East. The barbaric treatment of women is not confined to the Arab world,in most of the East and Africa, men rule supremely, with women being little more than personal property.Just look at the age old practice in India..if a daughter in law displeases her mother inlaw, the mother in law may douse her with kerosene and burn her alive.

It is easy for us as Westerners to judge the rest of the world by our standards, but their customs are ancient and ours new.We can only pray that such autrocities will end soon.

That can happen but it often the girls own family that does the dirty deed! If she offends she can be returned to her birth family - which means they have to return the dowery.

A story I heard about was where a young wife was "returned." Her father cut her ears and nose off!!!!! Then chucked acid in her face!!!!! She survived - maimed and blind!!!

BAGHDAD, IRAQ (CNN) -- Authorities in northern Iraq have arrested four people in connection with the "honor killing" last month of a Kurdish teen -- a startling, morbid pummeling caught on a mobile phone video camera and broadcast around the world.
The case portrays the tragedy and brutality of honor killings in the Muslim world. Honor killings take place when family members kill relatives, almost always female, because they feel the relatives' actions have shamed the family.
In this case, Dua Khalil, a 17-year-old Kurdish girl whose religion is Yazidi, was dragged into a crowd in a headlock with police looking on and kicked, beaten and stoned to death last month.
