View Full Version : straw vendors
pepper 05-21-07, - 07:49 PM the straw vendors said today that they are happy the rebuilding of the straw market has been halted for now. the plp promised in 2002 to consult the people on all issues. So far they have not consulted on one issue. the plp started rebuilding the straw market one week before the election and now we find out that they had planned to build a 4 storey building with restaurants and boutiques. the straw vendors did not want this and were not consulted on anything about it. Between alison hogging every foreign deal for her own office (isn't this against the law?) mps fighting in the cabinet. mps being accused of rape and getting an under aged girl pregnant, another one taking all his sweethearts furniture back, pushing nhi down the people's throats and holding off on the sale of the royal oasis because they wanted the investor to repay their debt they inherited by stupidly giving the people monies out of the treasury. this plp has proven to be the lousiest government ever in the history of the bahamas and they wonder why they lost? thank God the fnm is now in power because we could not take another five years of this do nuttin government and it's lousy performance.
Techno-Bunny 05-21-07, - 07:51 PM Where did you see this Pepper? You have a link to the statement from their association president or the newspaper article? If so, I'd like to read it. The only thing about the straw vendors that I saw in the paper today was a story in The Journal about how they make so much more money selling fake bags than selling straw :) Thanks!

it was on zns new at 1:00 pm. the journal only reports stories in favour of the plp so you would not see it in there. I'm hoping one of the other papers will print their quotes.
Techno-Bunny 05-21-07, - 07:58 PM Well I looked in the Tribune and The Guardian, but maybe I missed it. Anyway, ZNS Nightly News is about to come on, so we should see it then right?

yep hopefully you are listening now.
news can move a little slow here .. give it some time, im sure the journal will have it regardless of its PLP connections ..
Techno-Bunny 05-21-07, - 08:14 PM I saw it. Thanks! They seem pretty much split about what they want....Just like us I suppose :) However, it definitely seems like more consultation and explanation needs to be provided to them before work proceeds. I don't think they know what the building is going to be like nor do all of them agree with what they do know.
My understanding of the plans was not that it was going to be a four-storey market, just a four-storey structure. I thought the top two floors were supposed to house a restaurant , shops and offices. I agree with the lady who opposes the shops though. It seems like they would detract from the vendors sales, funneling the tourist $$ right into the pockets of the "rich" shop owners like she said.
In any event, I hope it gets sorted out soon.

nobody scrapped the redevlopment of bay street so get your story right. Just because it is not done the way the plp want does not mean it will not get done or even done better.

Chile Pepper don't be counting me in that group. I've been involved in government operated institutions for 20 years. I know just how long things take to get done........regardless of who's in power! Everything in its time I say, just as long as it's done right
chancellor 05-21-07, - 08:57 PM I heard about this plan a week befor election....that in actuallity there was to be some "solomon mines" like stores on the first floor, with the actuall vendors at the top, where they would be out of the way of the customers.
I did not take it as a comfirmed news, just as rumor....but I see it is coming to light!
ghettosnob 05-21-07, - 09:31 PM They should not have started it a week before elections to begin with. That was grossly irresponsible and absolutely not in the best interest of the Bahamian people.
Then Raytard has the nerve to come in the media criticizing the government for halting the project pending review. Excuse me? That project will cost the public purse tens of millions of dollars, and they expect the government to just go ahead and spend all that money cuz they started it days before elections?
These clowns really need to step back off the scene and grow a brain cuz they CAN'T be serious!
This why I am SOOOOOOOO glad I voted FNM!
