View Full Version : When the rain won't drain
The rainy season that Nassau is gearing up for can be a nuisance for anyone needing to go outside, but in some parts of Nassau even staying inside can mean getting your feet wet.
"We're living in the 21st century now; we should be past this," said Frankie Lowe, co-owner of Jack and Jill's clothing store on Bay St. "The sidewalks are covered, the water comes rushing in when the cars pass—it puts a damper on business."

maybe if bahamians paid some real taxes then the government can afford to make the infrastructural improvements needed in the country...
chancellor 05-22-07, - 01:37 AM Boy one time I stayed to late in downtown and trecked all the way the Victoria Avenue area to the bus stop near the British colonial to catch the last busses....about 7:50pm.
I didnt pay attention about the large water build up on bay street and thought I was safe, as I was at least 6 or 7 feet away from the curb. All of a sudden one of the taxis came barreling down straight throught the massive puddle....all of my collared shirt, my pants...my clarks.....wet!!!!!...with dirty water!!!

I couldn't wait to get home to bathe!! I lost how much time I spent in the tub!!
From that moment on I stay clear away......or I cross the street.
I thought the drains were clogged, but what can they do?...maybe install underground tanks to hold the water when the tide is too high for the storm water to drain...or redirect it to the sewer system all together...or else building will need to create their own systems to deal with the storm water until government finds a solution...if they can find one!

I agree, if real property tax for instance, was like the light or phone bills, people wooda pay it dead quick.
What I couldn't understand was why did Christie wanted to elliminate stamp duty for first time homeowners of houses up to $400,000.:jawdroop:
If a first time homeowner could afford a house that cost that much they MUST be able to afford the stamp duty, I mean, how on earth can we run a country if the people who can afford taxes pay none?
Think about it. A couple or even a person who qualifies for this amount of house has to be earning up to $100,000-$200,000 per year. Or put as a downpayment 10-20%. Thats $40-80,000 BEFORE closing costs. Then pay up to $4000-$5000 per month in mortgage depending on the interest rate.
I don't know who the target group was for that idea but it certainly was not your average first time homeowner!!
Take that stamp duty and fix the drains!!

It is call political economics!! Trust me that would have never happened. But just in case Christie was fool enough to do it--the Bahamians short circuit that any ways. The PLP desperation showed in so may ways during the campaign, it was pitiful!!

In many case the stamp is higher than the actual tax. It is just a fancy way of extorting money from us while tickling us. After a while the tickle becomes a nuisance!:shhh:

When the tide is high and the rain is coming down, I've been almost KNEE DEEP in water on DOWDESWELL ST. Once, the water was rushing so strong I fell into a manhole because the current had lifted the cover off the hole!
Still have a scar on my leg from over 2 years ago...
