Literally hours before the official opening of Parliament, ministers of the Gospel, along with Free National Movement supporters prayed for and pronounced a blessing over Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham and his government Tuesday, asking God to give them wisdom to lead the people of The Bahamas over the next five years.
During a service of thanksgiving Tuesday night at the New Lively Hope Baptist Church, Prime Minister Ingraham said that while his government has many obstacles to overcome, they are committed to providing good governance for all Bahamians, both PLPs and FNMs.
The Prime Minister said that he was thankful to God for giving him another opportunity to lead the country and asked for the continued prayers of The Bahamian people.
In a subtle attack on the Progressive Liberal Party, who announced a day ago that thet would be challenging several seats that they lost after the May 2 General Elections, Mr. Ingraham said that when the FNM lost the government in 2002, they accepted the loss, quietly took their place as the official opposition and moved on.
The Prime Minister hinted that the PLP seems reluctant to do the same.
On Monday, Pinewood was added to the four constituencies the PLP announced that they will challenge in election court with the hope of slashing the five-seat majority that allowedMr. Ingraham's FNM to form the government.
The southern New Providence seat, which newly appointed senator and former attorney general Allyson Maynard-Gibson lost to Minister of State for Youth and Sports, Byran Woodside, by 64 votes, joins the Blue Hills, Golden Isles, Marco City and Seabreeze constituencies on the list of seats, for which the PLP feels it has grounds to seek a reversal of official election results.
The FNM captured all five of the seats that are to be challenged by 64 votes or less.
A reversal of official results in any three of the five constituencies would cause the PLP to gain a majority of seats in the House of Assembly and allow the Opposition party to take the reigns of government.
Rev. Dr. Stephen Thompson invoked a prayer for the Prime Minister and his family.
Archdeacon Keith Cartwright prayed for the officers, members and supporters of the FNM and Bahamas Christian Council president, Bishop John Humes, bought greetings.
