Has anyone heard of the new tax on trash disposal at the city dump?
Apparently this came into effect on April 1st but this is no April fools joke and from now on any trash being deposited at the site over 300 lbs will be subject to a $10.00 fee and up.
What do you think about this?
How will this new tax affect small business owner who have to dispose of trash everyday?
Should there be a tax on trash disposal?
Are taxes being placed in the right areas of the Bahamas?

It will be no surprise to you that Bahamians don't like to take stuff to the dump if they can drop it by the side of the road. If there is a charge to take things to the City Dump then that is more of an incentive to leave it by the side of the road!
i guess there will be more illegal fires burning in nassau now!!
I wonder if they will put that tax where it is supposed to go, or waste it on some sports or cultural event... like moving the dump elsewhere and/or fixing the existing problem with island wide dump smoke at night.
there are alot of other things that can be taxed, I wonder why they picked this one. There should be fines for owners of roaming dogs, that contribute to garbage being dragged all over the streets.

so soory, but I must male a comment here in support for direct taxation in the form of income tax. The legendary Paul Adderley once said that rich people do not pay taxes under our current tax regime. Everyone and his brother knows that Mr. Adderly is the smartest man in this country so we need to take his advice: Let us get rid of customs duties ( or make this tax very small, 5% say) and institute a flat tax of 15% on income. Getting rid of customs duties will result in huge growth for the economy and the not so rich (construction of homes, new businesses etc., and growth in the retail sector) and income tax will force us to grow up and accept that paying taxes on income is a part of good citizenship. Maybe income tax will force us to pay more attention to what are leaders do with our money. Vote for income tax now (Bahama Journal Poll).

12play, as for the quoted statement by Mr. Paul Adderly that the rich don't pay taxes under our current system. That is absurd! If a rich man imports a car, he pays taxes for it. If he buy a house, he pays the stamps taxes etc. He pays Land Tax - most "poor" folk don't.
If we had an income tax here, there is where the rich will prosper. They have the money to hire lawyers to find ways around it or to avoid it all together - and there is always a way. There are men in the US that make millions of dollars a year and pay less tax that a street sweeper. The rich know how to avoid income tax, that is why they are rich!
In an ideal world everyone would pay 15% (as you suggest) But history has shown that you will pay 15%. The rich guy will pay next to nothing. He knows how to duck it, if he does not know he will find someone who does.
