Mama! as she was referred to by all of us was always a tower of strength and power. she ruled us grand children with lips of iron and hands of steel hovering over us as a mother hen over eggs waiting to hatch.
with piercing eyes like a two edged sword, that seems to read our innermost taughts, and cutting away the very appearance of evil.
Ears that heard even our unspoken words. Which was usually followed by a tongue lashing that hurt equally to a tan hyde. Mama never hesitated to tan our behinds when sha deemed it necessary. Then dared us to tell our parents, because she would deal with them likewise.
It was grammy's firm belief that if you 'spared the rod you spoil the child'. Beating didn't kill her and it sure wouldn't kill us.
As far as grammy was concern us children just didn't care 'what end go forward'. Girls were always to tae-tae and forward. She always said that we had 'a blaze of fire light up under us', that she felt was her responsibility to put out. And when grammy found it necessary to laugh at us, she always let us know that it was a bad laugh she was laughing.
But all things considered, we knew that grammy loved us.
We are better adults because of her.
Then the evening of her life arrived on the morning of the 17th of September 1987. Even in the end, grammy seemed to tower over what happen in her life.
On that fateful morning, grammy made her breakfast, cleaned her room and at eleven a.m. sat in her rocker and embraced death and the bosom of Abraham.
It has been some years since grammy's departure. But it seems as if she lives in me. I shiver at times to think, that even though, i had sometimes despised her actions her attitude and philosophy seem to have been resurrected in me.undefinedundefinedundefined
