View Full Version : 3 million dedicated to the poor!
Objective thought 06-02-07, - 03:08 PM It was very heart warming to hear that there has been an allocation of 3 million dollars to help in the uplifting of the poor. This is a brilliant move. Many persons including me believe that the former govt was moving too slow in bringing relief to the poor..eliminating outside toilets has been a very slow process for the former PLP govt through the urban renewal program but more direct focus was needed..
It will be very interesting to see how the monies dedicated for the poor or lower income families would be spent..
My hope is that the govt will go around and renovate or rebuild those persons homes free of charge. Therefore giving them a hand up, pulling them out of the gutter. For this many will be and this will indeed destroy the idea that the FNM is not interested in the poor..
This move will also start a big shift in the grassroot areas towards the FNM!!
All the miths would have been destroyed.....
But we all wait with much anticipation!!

Indeed!
Sunnyjohn 06-02-07, - 03:19 PM I ga get beat down for dis one, Yes I will.....
... but I hope they use dat $3 Mill for programs that teach sell-sufficiency (build you own house, Habitat for humanity clean up your yard, Pick up the garbage, Learn a trade, Learn to manage your money, learn to fish/type/sew/computers.... etc) type programs rather than just give it away.
Giving a large group of folks things without proper tools and education is like spitting in da wind....

i agree 100% because some bahamians rather handouts than trying to help themselves. but i agree with the govt on this one. this might be the first step in the renaissance of the OTH and island communities.

I agree give a man a fish as opposed to teaching him to fish.

Check this out sunny. I know this up your alley...Here's an excerpt from the budget. Check out the highlighted portion:
Several very important initiatives which my Government is taking are included in these expenditures. Firstly, my Government is restoring the 50% interest rate subsidy under the Education Loan Guarantee Programme. Secondly, my Government is setting aside $3 million for a special quality assurance programme in the education sector whereby participating public schools can draw on funding to hold remedial and special classes to enable pupils to attain basic educational standards. This is a crucial programme to prevent the emergence of social problems and alienation. Thirdly, my Government is implementing a $1 million youth programme whereby young persons will be given financial assistance to purchase tools and/or equipment to start their own small enterprises.
ghettosnob 06-02-07, - 03:32 PM If there is a politician out there who is familiar with the plight of the poor, HI is that politician. He knows where the most critical needs are becus he's been there.
This money certainly won't be enough to do everything, but it's definitely a move in the right direction.

I recorded the speech so that I can listen to it as often as I wish to.
I heard all of that good stuff too.
All I was suggesting is that doing it the way the former govt was doing it was going too slow. And if any govt realy want to put a dent in poverty they would have to physically have to get down in the gutter and pull most of those persons out.
If we depend on those persons getting jobs and bettering themselves that would take forever and poverty would only increase..
It is now time to stop talking and wishing and do something for a change!!
While some persons only need a hand up other persons desperately need a hand out!!!

I don't really want to be political but I have to say that we will be looking at the dismantling of the PLP at its core and they would be in opposition for a long time!!!!!!!!!!
I always told you guys that HI was a better politian than PC in fact I always called him a master politician, now maybe you all see where I was coming from!!
The PLP's future is beginning to look very dim!!!
They better pray that HI doesn't call an early election because if this works the PLP would be wiped out completely making way for the BDM!!!

i have always maintained that since 1992 HI has shown that he cares more about the poor than PC. There were things implemented in 1992-2002 to help alleviate some poverty as well.:hammer:

Yeah but what she is saying is this, if they want a new home, then they will be given the money for it, but they have to participate in building it ..

They need to make housing more affordable for the poor. This morning I heard Min of Labor Dion Foulkesspeak about raising the min wage. This is needed so badly.
Here is the thing if the min wage is 150.00 p.w. or 600.00 per month and the mortage payment for a low cost house is 900.00 how please tell me how can the poor afford housing???? The Goverment needs to step in and adjust this problem. Persons want to pay for their own homes but they simply can't afford to do so.
