I have a question for you Vicky.

Should a person change their moral standards to please others? Why or why not?

If they’re moral standards are in error yes. It was immoral to be left-handed. Christian’s murdered people for being left-handed.
Your morals are just that yours. If it’s immoral for you to dress as a woman then don't. But your morals are not mine and I have no problem dressing as a woman. You don't want to see me as a woman the close your eyes and go about your business
Watch a movie Called "Iron Jawed Angles" it was immoral for woman to have rights.
It was immoral for woman to wear pants. It was moral for a man to spank his wife.
It was moral to own slaves. Want more???
Morality changes and you have yours and each and every other person has theirs.
I should not use my morals to deny you your right to life love success and happiness. As long as your life/morals does not deny me those same rights.

The taxi service pretty much sucks. Yes no one should lower their standards or falter their values but respect is given where respect is due. The drivers have attitudes(I dont think I spelled that right) from being stress but I have seen things home in America and in the Bahamas. Being from Washington, DC the cab drivers will not pick up people of color after certain hours or in certain neighborhoods. When I was in the Bahamas both times on vactions had one bad experience with a taxi cab driver. He was so nasty and rude I had to make a complaint with him first. I had to tell him that if you want business you have to treat you customers better than what you are doing because you never get my business again. When I got home I called my friend in the Bahamas and aksed him why do people from the Bahamas view black people from the States as stuck up? and why cab drivers feel that they cannot view tourists as being black? He told me that ignorance of people is what cause those issues to be brought up not only from the tourists but the citizen of the country. All taxi cab companies have big attitude problems but some taxi drivers are just nasty. But where I feel people morals, people have values, and most of people have issues. I refuse to falter or lower for either to sucumb attitude.

Taxi franchises have always been a political issue. The transportation system plays an important role in our economic development and can act as a barometer to how far we have progressed socially.

I had an experience with taxi NP1048 on the day before Lynden Pindling's birthday which gave me pause. I arrived on a Bahamasair flight from Fort Lauderdale with my wife at about 11:30 P.M. After clearing Customs we went outside and asked a group of cab drivers if a cab was available. They responded that there was not a large enough cab available. We had two regular-sized suitcases and two carry-on bags. These easily fit in a normal-sized car (That's how we got them to the airport and in the end that's how we took them home.).

The cab drivers tried calling up a cab and taxi NP1048 showed up at the same time. We waved to him. He literally sauntered up to us displaying an attitude that was unbecoming to say the least. He looked us up and down and started saying "hmmmmmm". My wife was having none of this and she went inside to call home to have someone come to pick up us. I told the cab drivers I would report their behaviour.

To further compound matters a white couple came out of the terminal. The driver of NP1048 rushed over to them, curtseying the whole way, opened his van door for them, loaded their luggage, and took them to wherever they went. The other cab drivers were so embarassed they then promised to get someone to take us home. They wanted to know where I was going. At this point I would have walked home rather than ride with any of them. I told them they did not need to know where I was going. The time to ask me that would have been when I was seated in the cab.

What we have here are several social issues. We have struggling taxi drivers racially profiling clients. We have black on black racism.

We also have a situation where many taxis do not have working meters and they know they can cheat or intimidate tourists. So they prefer to carry tourists and they basically rob them.

Maybe not finally, we have poor people standing around ignoring income that approaches them and then wondering why they are poor, why things are so tough.

We need to clean up the taxi business. We need to introduce competition. It is unfair for a few people to have opportunity and many who want it to be denied. Anyone, who can pass the tests to certify themselves as taxi drivers should be given permission to drive taxis. Anyone who has a vehicle that meets the requirements should be allowed to pay the government's fees and get a taxi plate. Competitiion will force an increase in standards. Government should ensure that taxis perform to acceptable standards.

I guess I was so angry because when we were about to depart Ft. Lauderdale my wife said she was going to call home to have someone pick us up. I told her not to - we can catch a cab. My reasoning for wanting to take a cab was and is simple - the more money moves around the better it is for the economy. I feel when money stops moving, someone has or develops a problem.

The taxi drivers at the airport are busy building their own problems. On the back of this we need to be mindful that all taxi drivers do not display the bad attitude and bad manners displayed by the driver to Taxi NP1048.

it comes back to you, just like how you hate haitians that all, you ever hear what goes around comes around, am not giving the taxi man right, but one have to understand where ever you dish out something in this life it comes right back to you

Sad to say CG but this is the norm.
I worked in the hotel industry for four years and when I left it was worse than how I met it. One of the most difficult things for a hotel employee who doesn't own a car and works the night shift is getting a cab to take them home. I have witnessed employees who have knocked off at 12am still waiting on a taxi until the early morning hours and at the same time there is a line of empty taxis at the front door of the hotel.

I pray for my people to be delivered from this mentality one day.

i work in the hotel and never have problem with taxi drivers and i was work for 12 years,i never have problem with no taxi driver, it is how we aproach people too

Being in Canada for the past three years, I must say that the customer service in the stores is superb. No matter your race, ethnicity, gender, etc, in most instances you will be greeted with a smile, and a 'If you need any help I am right over there' greeting. Not in the Bahamas. As a black Bahamian woman, I am lucky if retail staff even acknowledge me. WHen they do get around to serving me, most of them just drag as though someone has them in chains. Anyone with common sense knows the importance of good Customer service. I have never had the experience with the TAxis that EBo had, but I am not going to even try to find out. I wont waste my time. I no longer have tolerance for bad attitudes from store clerks, or any one else in a service industry. Until Bahamians start demanding respect, the foolishness will continue. I am adamant that when I walk into a store and I am getting a stink attitude from retail staff, or get a stink attitude from taxi drivers that they will not pay their mortagage with my money.

You know I normaly am able to contain myself on this forum, but you are annoying with this constant 'We treatin da Haitian dem bad attitude so das why Bahamians get what dey get argument'. Why dont you house every illegal and do this country a finacial favour. If not, then have something with sense to say about it

You know, this bad attitude seems to be a mind thing, and only the good Lord would know where or how many of us develop a kind of miserable mind-set. Once in a while I would come across a person whose attitude is so messed up and crazy it seems they grew up under some kind of rock somewhere! THEN I WOULD WONDER, "HOW ON EARTH CAN THEY ALSO BE BAHAMIANS WHO WERE BORN AND GREW UP RIGHT HERE JUST LIKE ME!!!??? AND WE ARE SO VASTLY DIFFERENT!!!"

One time a friend of mine was explaining all the hell he was catching in some areas of his life and I wondered why I was not having any problems like that! I told him, and to my surprise, he said that it was most likely because "you are very light-skinned!" (both of us are black, but he is of a much darker hue).

Well, I am wondering! Could it be that some of us would treat others more favourably and more respectfully if our skins are of a lighter colour!?

If that is so, then Rory is right -- we have all kinda discrimination 'round here, colour, race, this, that, and whatever! And it is very sad!

Taxi drivers have meters?! For real?.... I thought it was a flat rate.

In my opinon the taxi union should be destroyed. They believe they have a literal birthright to the market. Where in hell do they get off. When there were tourists on this island, they fought right in front of them because the tourists would rather charter a tour bus rather than use crazy taxis (and I dont blame them). More tourists are now renting their own cars and driving on the left.....and I wonder how that came to be?.....you should look on expedia and other sites and read their comments on our customer service(didnt I tell you word gets around fast?). Then they want to discriminate against their own citezens....the people that taxis were made to service in the first place. I know if someone tried that stupidness I vow that they'll never get my money. And sometimes THEY wonder why most Bahamians dont support there own.....YOU CANT SUPPORT THEM IF YOU TURN THEM AWAY NOW CANT YOU?!

i was just in freeport this past weekend.

on the way from our cruise to the hotel i was charged $8 per person for my me my wife, 8 year old daughter, they tried charging me an additional $8 for my 3 year old son, but i took issue with that and he said i didnt have to pay it.
we shared the taxi with another party of 4 going to another hotel, they only paid $7 each since it was was not as far away as ours.

when we had to return to the cruise the taxi driver said it is normally $8 per person but since we didnt have a full cab he wanted to charge me $40 for the ride, or we could wait to see if we could fill the cab with others.
after waiting 30 minutes the driver said that it appeared we wouldnt have anyone else to ride, but he could now charge only $35

is this standard practice? should i have requested the ride be metered?
how does the metered rate differ? is it per person and per mile?

personally i did not have a problem because i feel that with all the cabs waiting i may have been his only fare for the day but i did think it odd to see a meter that wasnt used but passed it off as something that did not work, considering we were lucky that the taxi made it to the ship without breaking down or falling apart on the way there.

If the Taxi driver does not have a working meter in their taxi, then they are simply hackers, who can dictate any price they feel.

so the taxi driver is required by law to have and use a working meter & the rate should be charged according to that meter price?

is it per person and per mile? are the rate meters standardized?

please excuse this ignorant american for asking so many questions, i am just trying to be as well informed as possible.

thanx

Well law doesnt mean a whole lot down here, especially when it comes to taxis, so I wouldnt loose sleep over that. Just ask them to turn the meter on, if they refuse, seek another taxi.
