I am assuming its in ref to this stateement

Hubert Ingraham’s FNM government has turned back from the bold and courageous planned economic redevelopment and revitalization of Bay Street and the movement of the container port which is vital to the sustained development of Bay Street, our cruise ship industry and our economy as a whole.

Hubert Ingraham’s FNM government has turned back on the provision for a comprehensive national health insurance plan which would allow access to proper health care for all Bahamians, regardless of their social, religious or economic background. This was the most progressive government initiative offered to the people of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas since the introduction of National Insurance by the PLP in l972.

Hubert Ingraham’s FNM government has turned back on the Urban Renewal Program which was both nationally and internationally acclaimed as a positive step towards addressing the troubling issues facing our brothers and sisters in the inner city communities of our country.

If these are covered in the budget, then where did Mr. Christie get this stuff from? I am assuming the government didn't go shutting down all of the Urban Renewal offices or did they?

Throughout the election campaign, the Urban Renewal Programme was continually labeled as a "failed initiative" of the PLP.

In a press conference on May 6th 2007 (with the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister present) the Minister of National Security the Hon. Tommy Turnquest said that the current Urban Renewal Programme was to be "deemphasized". He also said that his Ministry's focus would be to remove the police from the communities and put them back on the streets to fight crime where they belong.

I think it is for these reasons that people got the impression that the Urban Renewal Programme was being scrapped. Now we see that the current budget is allocating even more funds to the programme, so what happens to it now remains to be seen........

p.s. It was at the same press conference that Prime Minister Ingraham also said that the Port would not be moved from downtown to Clifton. I think Mr. Ingraham revised his statement a few days later though.

Seems someone was chasing windmills and barking at the moon. Obviously, the PLP spoke too soon on the intent of the FNM.

Why in God's name do Urban Renewal have offices? What do they need offices for? Get out into the community and do some actual renewing of urban areas, not sit on a phone in an aircondoo office!

Build a park, paint a building, pick up some litter, talk to the folks!

i agree. i never understood why they felt it necessary to have the police as the main 'force' in the urban renewal program. i think that the program needs to be approached from a different angle....and have more emphasis placed on the constituents taking (micro and macro) responsibilities for their communities.

Actually, Urban Renewal Programs exist in a number of developed countries...
Moreso, the police department or branches thereof are apart of this project. I am assuming the PLP government adopted the program or the likeness thereof from these countries. Nonetheless, I am not suggesting that the Urban Renewal Program in the Bahamas exisst in its best form.

Actually, we had this discussion on BI before...
the general belief was that the Urban Renewal would either be scrap, or revised. There were mass debate regarding the subject, subsequently the government revised it plan regarding the project.

i'm familiar with the concept of Urban Renewal...but i don't think the police should have been the central force used to implement this program. it all comes down to the people living in these areas. it is THEIR neighbourhood....THEIR homes....THEIR communities. granted, the police presence is supposed to HELP....but if the people they're supposed to be helping don't care, then it's all for naught.

Here is why we need offices....We have a lot of writing to do inorder to get the powers that be to provide what we need in the community. Do you think we just go around doing things???/ they have to be assessed and then based on the need and the ability of the persons assistance is given. We are a team of a number of agencies that have to correspond with our head offices in writing. We have to interview persons and because ofthe sensitivity of the information privacy is needed. Now you can come and also go in the community and assist. Remember this is a community effort and your help is also needed. send me ya e-mail and I will let you come visit our office so you can see first hand what we do.
