I must say, I really like this thread! Financial investment has been close to my heart since 1998.

Here is a snapshot of some my stake:

1. Simple IRA and personal 401(K). I max out contributions each year and have since 2000.

2. Two condos I paid $40K each for (no down payment) in mid 2001. One is paid off. The other I pay $320 a month mortgage for. They rent for $600 each month.

3. $30-$50K in stock and index funds. (I LOVE YOU APPLE!)

4. $8K emergency fund in an account earning 5.15% interest. I need this so I can sleep good at night.

I'll stop there. The "tuck shop" has be very good to me! LOL! :p

Are you saying Bahamians asked for incompetence, corruption, and waste??

You don't have to ask as long as you accept what's been given.

When you allow yourself to be driven by partisan political emotions you elect person's who understand only politics and have no idea of developing and growing an economy. You have no checks and balances and no accountibility...

You must insist on getting competence and not limit yourself to party colours...

But this will not change until you change...

That's why this forum is so important and should not be used to foster the acceptance of the status quo but as a lobby for change.

Ting,
I sure don't think we asked for it, but I do think we were culpable.
Well even the Dominican Republic is kicking our butts when it comes to economy growth and investment attraction. Why pay a Bahamian $100 to do a mediocre job when you can pay a Dominican half that for good work? We have corrupted out greatest natural resource, our level of customer service.

I would agree that Bahamians were complicit in the erosion of the Bahamian economy. Depending on whether you think the Bahamian economy was ever at bloom or even full bloom.

The problem with the Bahamas is tourism. Simply as that. We do not have a comparative advantage in tourism. There are more appealing spots in the Caribbean that are cheaper or provide services that tourists want to see. St Barts has the shopping tourists would want, Jamaica and Trinidad has the scenary, Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico has the history that fascinates millions every year. The Bahamas has gambling and liquor. And with Bahamians destroying the environment every day - what little we have to offer is vanishing.

The planet is becoming more dependent on financial services than anything else. The Bahamas *DOES* have a comparative advantage over *EVEN* the United States, but Bahamians are not taking advantage of it. Bermuda does and the Cayman Islands does - which is why they are both far ahead of the Bahamas in economic growth. But Bahamians are so xenophobic and resistant to intellectual growth that most would rather send their money elsewhere. Which is what is happening.

You are brave. I personally think that the indices are headed for a severe correction. But right now they're driven by energy and other commodities thanks mostly to china and india. I think their economies will contract sooner than later and the indices will tumble. But I've never been particularly bullish.

That law disregards that we send almost all of our money out of the country anyhow.

I mean even when we have accounts in non-Bahamian banks.......those people could take our money out of here to Europe/US/Canada.....ANYTIME. I think that is a greater risk than putting $500 into Jet Blue.

How would they know if you buy stock in ADT or another company? It's not like the government has the ability to track money.

honestly this is the first I heard of this one.

Not yet. It's one of the reasons behind the push to remove "exchange control"...
