On Sunday, taking our usual route through Westridge North from NPCC, Blake Road, on our way back to Cable Beach, where we live, we were amazed to find the road blocked by concrete posts! We had to take an alternative route!

We had seen no warning that the road was going to be blocked and wonder if this is legal? Who arranged for the road to be blocked? Shouldn’t there have been some warning to the public (perhaps published in one of our local newspapers or announced on the radio – or did I miss it?)? Aren’t the roads through Westridge public thoroughfares?

I have never seen this happen before in New Providence, where a “public” road is suddenly blocked, virtually without warning. Of course, I don’t travel on all of the roads here all of the time. I assume it was done because the residents on the road must have had some concerns. However, Westridge is not a gated community yet (if indeed it can be).

Today traveling from the airport to Cable Beach we noticed there is now a sign “no through road” where you turn through the road that is blocked off, and we took our alternative route through Westridge. However, I wonder how long it will be before all Westridge roads are blocked to through traffic.

One of the reasons we drive through Westridge when we go to church or the airport is that the sea road (West Bay Street) is so bumpy! If government is responsible for blocking this Westridge Road, wouldn’t it have been wiser to fix the front road so that drivers don’t avoid it and take short cuts elsewhere?! We are now going to have even more taxis and other drivers overtaking on West Bay Street to try and get to their destination quicker!

Thats a public road, Ill drive right over and through it in my jeep if I come across it! ;-)))

If there is no sign, then it is not a legal road block.

Drivers beware, criminals in Nassau also do similar to this to stop you so they can rob you. Unless there is a legit sign, pay no attention to it, get through it as quick as possible, or get away from it as quick as possible. I have had to swerve out of the way of illegal road blocks numerous times, when there were people trying to or they were robbing people, and these were primarily on main roads!!!

Hmm, I live on eastern road, all that traffic from 7am - 9am in the morning is annoying, what If I were to put up concrete blocks in the middle of Eastern Road, that is illegal!!!! The people who put these up in Westridge, nor me, own those roads, they are public and all of the Bahamas Residents pay taxes indirectly, to use them.

Did someone suddenly buy the road? If so there needs to be a sign, either way, it is an illegal act to stop traffic without legal notice, in 1st world countries at least.

I suggest a tractor, a now daily occurence driving on the roads of Nassau, take a trip down there and knock them out of the ground!!! :escape:

Same goes for any goverment vehicle blocking traffic without directing traffic, and without signs.

That road was paved by the developers, I believe, and will be blocked indefinitely. The word on the street (excuse the pun) was that the fact that the road being used as a public thoroughfare didn't sit well with the developers. It'll probably be a gated community soon enough.

Thanks for the information Bahmia, but it would have been nice if the public could have had some advance warning (unless I missed this).

No, you didn't miss it. There was no official warning.
I only heard about it myself because someone doing some work on a place out there mentioned it a day or two before it actually happened.

Oh, well. I'll guess we'll just have to get used to taking the bumpy beach road and ruin our tyres!
