1bigfrog 06-20-07, - 10:20 AM But you dig my colloquialism, I mean, we have some serious un-explored avenue's in regards to our tourism product. I mean, some serious virgin territory...
I can say for a fact, that my travels through Europe, has shown me that the Bahamas is a name brand in Tourism. Jamaica has Bob Marley, Ganja as well as sun sand and sea...and we compete with them like they were average to us.
This is why I say, we are a festival away from being over 5 million. Trinidad has Carnival..we have Junkanoo for two nights; at best. We need to have a major festival...I mean a HUGE festival around spring break time.
A long azzed promoted weekend of hedonism and frivolity....
:hammer:
We going to host that Caribfest soon...that should be big...perhaps after we host that, we shall have a yearly thing.
Vicky 06-20-07, - 10:22 AM Well I am still in Montreal and made a weekend trip to Albuny NY to visit a friend.
When I was introduced and told them I was from the Bahamas or I talked with people and told them I was from the Bahamas. I got some very mixed feed back.
Some responces were you are so lucky to live there.
I would say Its the most beautiful place on earth and would talk about our clear water and beaches.
Some was in referance to Anna Nicole Smith.
I would say she got us some real publicity.
Some was the Rosie cruise and the HBO documentery. I pointed out that not all was as it seemed in her documentry. Yes there were some protesters but that was not how it was for all Bahamians.
and more that were not so nice.
We are pushing our selves out of the market.
Sunnyjohn 06-20-07, - 10:22 AM I did say for a while get to Europe and get those Euros in here. But nooooooooooo yall still gone to tired old New York with "Bahamavention".
Europe, China, India, the Middle East.....
Why can't we on BI put together our own Bahamas ad an post it on the European/ Chinese/ Indian/ Middle Eastern version of You tube?
I am sure folks here are more than creative enough.
If we keep waiting on da 'gubment we ga' starve! LOL! :p
FACTS ONLY 06-20-07, - 10:27 AM Is there such a thing as Bahamian native garments...
But it was a good comercial...the garments were neo-colonial...
WOW, big frog, thanks for the correction......hmmmmmmmm neo-colonial eh..
Sunnyjohn 06-20-07, - 11:06 AM Can someone put a link to the commercial on Youtube?
It sounds good.

Wait till Bahamawave gets up, maybe he can find it.
wide eye 06-20-07, - 11:19 AM Our tourism product is suffering from many infections. Bad service, rude locals, dirty, no diversification, nothing to do outside the major resort, no nightlife, very expensive, are all complaints i have heard. I agree with Alien:jawdroop: we need to target the European markets as they have the $$ now the Euro is so strong. A word of caution is that if we do not pull up our socks and clean up our environment and attitude all the advertising in the world is useless. Word of mouth is what really counts and the tourist we have are not "advertising" the Bahamas the way we would like due to our own shortcomings.
The cruise ship thing is something we need to wonder about as well. I think i read that 90% of our tourist are off cruise ships but they only account for 10% of our tourist revenue. The question then is why are we not trying to garner more stopover tourist and what can we do to make sure they come back?
I agree also with Sunny, we NEED to diversify our economy. There will be some sort of problem in the U.S. due to terrorism, it is only a matter of time. What will we do then? I remember the first gulf war when the island almost ground to a halt, can we handle that again? We need something else as we have put all our eggs in one basket and right now that basket is looking worn and frayed.

Some of us give good service..... MANY of us are rude and disgusting...
:gi:
wide eye 06-20-07, - 11:28 AM I agree with you on having to explore other markets besides the good old northeast U.S.A. As far as service goes it is spotty at best IMO so we disagree on that. How many time have you asked for your check and since the server thinks you are done they seem to forget about you. I have had it so bad that trying to pay the bill took longer than the meal.:realmad:
diarra 06-20-07, - 11:46 AM All good points. But another major problem we have is "PRICE."
We are pricing ourselves out of a huge portion of the market. The Bahamas is just too xpensive nowadays. I can fly from NY to Cancun for 5 days 4 nights, stay in a very nice hotel, receive tremendous service from professional employees.... and spend less than $600.00. Try that combo to the Bahamas and see what the price will be!
I mean yeah, you want to attract a certain calibre of guests but when we allow every hotel property to target only one particular group then it affects your bottom line tremendously. And besides, we no longer have "professionalism" and " pride" amongst most people that interact with tourists. For most who work in tourism it is just a job and they couldn't care less about their level of service etc. Besides gratuity is already included so they don't have to be nice or go beyond their level of duty for anyone. Our tourism goose is getting cooked slowly over a coal oven..... just think ... Cuba investing 150 million just to develop a market... but we pay Fallon Advertising almost 20 million, I think it was, to bring a Bahamavention that ya don't even hear about anymore.............
We need to use our greatest assets which is our out island serenity. Enough with these major developments on the outer Islands. I would love to see more eco- tourist lodges and bonefish/ fishing in general lodges and stuff. We should develop recovery and medical recuperation lodges or wellness/ spa hotels. It's so so much more we can do but put 20 story monstrosities on every little peaceful Island we have. And stop selling all dese damn private Cays to foreigner who then turn around and develop their own retreats that they rent out, look at Musha Cay...... over 300K for a one week stay.
We have limited vision if any at all.............

CoralWave's speed offerings, which are known by their musical names of Jazz, Lite, Groove and Rock, will now vary from 1.5 megabits per second to three, six and nine megabits per second. There will be no increase in price to CoralWave subscribers for this dynamic upgrade.
To celebrate the musical themes of the product line, CoralWave is using the talent of Bahamian musicians, past and present. Since each of the Internet products is represented by its own signature tempo, a different music and musician is featured. During the initial phase of the "How Fast Do You Like It?" campaign, CoralWave will highlight the music of George Symonette, the unique guitar style of Joseph Spence as performed by Fred Ferguson and Geno D, the Rake N' Scrape of Ophie and the Webbsites and the Junkanoo sounds of Colours.
In addition to the use of Bahamian music, CoralWave retained the services of Lakeisha Bostwick of the National Dance Company to choreograph original dance routines for each of the four musical genres, which her dancers have performed for music videos that can be seen on cable television as in commercials for the new CoralWave "How Fast Do You Like It?" campaign.
Photographs of these dancers will also be featured on "How Fast Do You Like It?" black trucks belonging to Cable Bahamas and will be seen on the road all over New Providence and on Grand Bahama.
David Burrows credits the inspiration for this exciting new campaign to the performances of the Bahamian performers at the CARIFESTA Caribbean Festival of Arts, held last August in Trinidad. "When CoralWave was looking for the most effective way to market our 'How Fast Do You Like It?' campaign, we could think of no better way than to use the dynamic sound of Bahamian music and the exemplary talent of our dancers and performers. We are excited about the potential of these quintessential Bahamian sounds for marketing these incredible new products that will position CoralWave as the unquestioned leader in Internet broadband services and technology, both here in The Bahamas and in the Caribbean," said Burrow

Yahooey 06-20-07, - 01:40 PM when you wanna target european tourist you cannot advertise nassau and freeport. they dont want big hotels and crowds. what they want is a relaxing vacation with no casinos. thats why san salvador is becoming a famous destination for europeans. san sal have direct flights from europe. if we could market more of our out islands to the european travelers then we would be in a good position.
but honestly if we really attract travelers from all over the world, open a nudist resort or beach. you will see the flocks that would come here.
