Ya know. I have been listening to the caterwauling, and the lamentations on the loss of tourists, because we are rude and blah blah blah...
Some of it may be true, but allot of it is baloney I say; especially if one walks into the top resorts, and see the level of professionalism portrayed by the front staff.
However, I think as a total community we can do allot better. For example, we used to "as citizens" treat our tourist, every tourist, like they were our personal house guests. And in fact, as small as we are, they ARE our personally invited guests!
We need to treat them like that, and in fact, we need a public education, to counteract the negativity being portrayed downtown; the whores and the dope dealers. We need to begin a reawakening, of every man woman and child, that tourism is our way of life and with that, we need to extend "maximum coverage" full service to our society, in regards to every man woman and child, taking the time out to be involved in treating our guests like the decent human beings they are.
Schools need an injection of Bahamas-Host hospitality seminars. Businesses down town need an injection of the Bahamas-host hospitality seminars. In fact, open crash courses in the "basic" hospitality and tourist treatment, needs to be extended on a national basis. This does not have to be expensive, it just takes 5-10 people, going on a monthly circuit, making sure people no matter what walk of life, are taught on the importance of committing to premium service to our guests!
This will go along way in keeping people in I reckon, and reduce some of the negative complaints, as well as begin to counteract the negativity, which seems to be the only medium that people are seeing, whether or not how much it impacts.
I say all of this, with full knowledge of the "repeat" and "extended" visitors we "used to have", and the fact is, that they either had a family member who worked here, or, they were emeshed and integrated into our society, by "good and decent" Bahamian hosts!
We need to get back to basics, and run a full maximum coverage, public awareness campaign on how to treat tourists, and make them your own!
