The Bahamas National Trust's decision to accept money from Baker's Bay is "entirely hypocritical," and is tantamount to the country's lead environmental agency ignoring the "serious" environmental concerns raised by the Save Guana Cay Reef Association, according to an environmental lobbyist.

Anyone seen the plans for Baker's Bay? Just curious.

BNT needs the support of regular Bahamians so they don't have to depend on developers.

It seems we won't catch sense until our precious Bahamian ecosystem is gone.

The article and commenst by the Save Guana Cay folsk are totally off base and unfair.

First, The BNT is a PRIVATE, NON-PROFIT organization that just happens to care about the Bahamas. The BNT has no legal mandate and IS NOT a governmental agency and the long arm of the law when it comes to the environment. Currently the Bahamas only has the Department of Environmental Health which is further buried inder the Ministry of Helth and Social Services. It is very dangerous to rely on the BNT to enforce environmental stewrdship on industry in it's present mission and role.

Second, The BNT can take money from anyone. This does not compromise their mission. They are not in the approval/decision-making chain of government therefore they don't compromise the well being of the environment just by simply endorsing good work if they see it.

Third...The Christie administration attempted to bring the government need to focus on the environment by creating the Ministry of Energy and Environment to give it more visibility at the cabinet level. Other madates by the IDB and studies also cried out about the need for a ministry of environment or a department at least so tha we can build the necessary elements of a successful environmental program, but now....we're two steps back trying to rely on BEST (which is not there mission..they only advise the PM not enforce laws), BNT and the Nature Conservancy (another private non profit organization) to do the work on the GOVERNMENT.

So you Save Guana dis and dat can go to hell. Leave the BNT to do it's work something it's been doing for years before all you Bahamians start talking anout wetlands dis wetland dat.

Out!

Well I been saying something from DAY ONE!

I ain't mad at Sol of tryin' to make a dollar but I don't wanna hear one word from Nassau people when all a yinna gatta move to Rum Cay so Atlantis can open Phase 15!

I have no problem with development. I DO have a problem with sprawl and irresponsible development.

Ecotourism is big money, but we prefer to rip up and pave over.

If yinna would send the Trust a dollar each, they would not have to beg for money from da robbers dem!

(PS. I am not attacking Baker's Bay as I have not had a chance to look over the plans)

What we need is a Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) like we have here in the US.

Anyone who has been to Great Guana Cay since the destruction has begun can clearly see that what they are doing is detrimental to the enviroment. Tearing out mangroves to make a marina, hydraulic dredging to fill the wetlands to make more room to build and destruction of the vegetation. What the island needs is a smaller development with respect for what the local people need as far as the surrounding enviroment to maintain their way of life. This is not an area where a mega-development should be built, 1 major hurricane through the area and it will be a disaster area with pollution and damage.

Guana Cay residents would have complained no matter what...that is what they do...

Sorry Nationbuilder but you don't have a clue! SGCR doesn't pay the attorney. He is working Pro Bono and has for a long time now.

Thank God someone in the Bahamas does some complaining or all of the islands would become totally "American" and the locals would be second class citizens. The Bahamas are selling out to foreigners, especially Americans.

Guana Cay local,

Why didn't they come to you all first and give the locals the chance to buy the property to stop overdevelopment and put up their own more environmentally friendly hotel/marine/resort? Something more fitting with the the Abaco mystique?

That is something local government could have developed. It's crown land. It should have been offered to locals first.

Let this be a lesson to all Bahamians. If you live on an undeveloped island, get your people together and put your development in motion. If you let others do it, ya' just might get screwed! :gi:

like the 2nd home owners who are doing the complaining? :D

Hey nothing wrong with American though .. most everything we have here comes from the US .. even countries in the world that "hate" america use american things ... one small example would be Microsoft Windows Operating System, oh yeah, and Mac .. ;)

Id like to see a MacDonalds on every island in the Bahamas :shaky:
