View Full Version : Étienne Dupuch & King Edward VIII
Excalibur 07-05-07, - 09:17 PM I found this quote that I found Interesting, what do you guys make of it;
"...However, he was praised for his efforts to combat poverty on the island nation (the Bahamas), although his attitudes (unremarkable at the time) were racist. He said of Étienne Dupuch, the editor of the Nassau Daily Tribune: "It must be remembered that Dupuch is more than half Negro, and due to the peculiar mentality of this Race, they seem unable to rise to prominence without losing their equilibrium."[17] He was praised, even by Dupuch at the time, for his resolution of civil unrest over low wages in Nassau in 1942, even though he blamed the trouble on communist agitators and draft-dodging Jews"

Interesting.....
androsann 07-05-07, - 09:31 PM I would be interested to find out where that quote came from originally. I read the footnote and saw that it was quoted from Zeigler's book, but I wonder where he got it from.
Also interesting to note that the wiki post makes no reference of the Harry Oakes murder and the Duke of Windsor's role in that investigation.
islandgyal 07-05-07, - 09:40 PM very interesting, and rather in keeping with the society mindset at the time, especially throughout the commonwealth countries.
androsann 07-05-07, - 09:48 PM An interesting item from Dupuch himself in Time magazine (1978)

Amazing.... for his race is not listed.
And for Roland Symonette; it says "Mixed".
Most of the people in Bahamian society who we consider white and who consider themselves white are in fact not.

You're right. In fact I thought that Pierre was white but I guess his grandmother was black or half black.
BahamaWave 07-05-07, - 10:27 PM can we measure degrees of blackness? maybe. it is often said that if you are 10% black then you are black. hmmmm....that always struck me as a white racist statement. if a person is 10% black and 90% white do simply just disregard the white? who taught us to believe this formula? the white slave master? Hitler?

ah...
Harriet was white....
Leon was the black one...
or off white one...

man, if you look white you white...
and if you look black you black...
we read too much into colour...

You know, the sad part is we don’t ever consider the degree of being white. Your remarks alone support’s it.
No matter how white you are, if you have black decedents, you’re black.
You make an interesting point about where it came from, but I ask, where is it now and where is it going.
It’s all about the eugenics movement by friend.
