Blackle saves energy because the screen is predominantly black. "Image displayed is primarily a function of the user's color settings and desktop graphics, as well as the color and size of open application windows; a given monitor requires more power to display a white (or light) screen than a black (or dark) screen."

yea I like a plain black desktop too. your PC will run faster without an image.
but I share my PC with my kids and they say it's "boring". lol.
so every now and then I'll use a wallpaper... like now:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v103/godsign/desktop55.jpg
and I use only one icon with all other icons placed within. I'm a neat freak. lol.

For others that may be interested, instead of deleting all your programs, files, and shortcuts from the desktop (or using the above tip, which is a good method), you can also just hide them by a simple change of a value in the registry.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced

Though you will need to logoff and log back on again, or just terminate explorer.exe and restart it.

You could then just create a shortcut to the desktop and place that in the quicklaunch for whenever you want to view those files. Also auto hiding the taskbar will make the whole screen the background, except a very small part of the taskbar will still show even when hidden.

I use TweakUI (http://www.download.com/3000-2341-2830963.html) to do that. didn't delete the icons at all. simple to use. no headache. and I always auto-hide the task bar.
