The shabby state of downtown Nassau has presented difficulties for the Ministry of Tourism with Director General of Tourism Vernice Walkine asserting that it is "difficult to tout a downtown that has seen better days."

"Well, I would say that it is making it very difficult for us to be able to talk about a new and improved downtown experience. It’s very difficult to talk about a downtown that is devoid of the straw market as we used to know it, that is crowded, noisy and is not very attractive," she said.

"There’s no story there, from our perspective. I mean, there’s a story but it’s not a very positive story. So it makes it difficult for us to actively promote the whole downtown experience."
